MCCB and SFU differ in their principles of operation and protection capabilities. SFUs operate based on a weak fuse link that melts under overcurrent, protecting downstream components. MCCBs use thermal and electromagnetic mechanisms to open under overload and high currents respectively. MCCBs can discriminate faults based on current and time, while SFUs only provide current-based discrimination. MCCBs allow setting the current rating to the cable's maximum, while SFU-protected cables require oversizing. MCCBs have higher upfront costs but lower long-term costs as their contacts can be reclosed after faults, unlike fuses which must be replaced.
