A 63-year-old man was arrested in Lavaltrie, Quebec in connection with a bomb attack that severely injured a 52-year-old Petro-Canada worker in September. The worker had received a booby-trapped gift box that exploded when opened, as well as harassing phone calls before and after the incident. A search of the suspect's home found materials that could be used to build a similar explosive device. The suspect is scheduled to appear in court and police have confirmed the suspect and victim did not work together, but have not divulged the nature of their relationship.

MONTREAL – Police have arrested a 63-year-old Quebec man in a case linked to a
bizarre bomb attack near Montreal last September. The man was arrested Thursday in Lavaltrie, Que., about 50 kilometres northeast of Montreal. Police said Thursday the man is a suspect in a criminal harassment case against a 52- year-old Petro-Canada worker who was the sent a booby-trapped gift box a couple of months ago. On Sept. 3, Andre Girard received severe injuries to his face and hands after he opened the box that had been left on the doorstep of his home in Repentigny, just east of Montreal. The blast was loud enough to be heard several blocks away and forced the evacuation of about 20 people from their homes. Police said Girard had been receiving harassing phone calls both before and after the bomb attack. Quebec provincial police spokesman Benoit Richard said the suspect’s home was searched by police. He said police found materials that could be used to build an explosive device similar to the one sent to Girard. Richard refused to divulge the relationship between the two men but did confirm they didn’t work together. The accused will appear in court Friday.
