The Nihon Shoki (720 CE) describes the early formation of the world when heaven and earth had not yet separated, and all was in a formless, murky state. Within this, there existed a faint glimmer containing the buds or seeds of clarity and brightness. Over time, the heavy and turbid parts sank and collected, while the fine and pure essence could easily be gathered and took shape. It is said that the gods then separated heaven from earth, establishing land that drifted about like fish swimming or reeds floating, and named this first deity Okuninushi.
