Equivalence Principle

An accelerometer measures proper acceleration, which is acceleration experienced relative to freefall. Proper acceleration is acceleration relative to a frame of reference that is free of acceleration, known as an inertial frame. An accelerometer works by measuring the displacement of a damped mass on a spring when it experiences an acceleration; this displacement is then used to calculate the acceleration. An inertial navigation system uses accelerometers to continuously calculate a moving object's position, orientation, and velocity without external references by using dead reckoning based on its previous position and estimated speed and direction of movement over time.

Equivalence Principle:

An accelerometer is a device that measures proper acceleration, the acceleration experienced relative
to freefall.

PROPER ACCELERATION:

acceleration is the rate of change of velocity over time

It is acceleration relative to a free-fall, or inertial(TIME INVARIANT)

INERTIAL---------------NO FICTION,TIME INVARIANT

NON INERTIAL------------------FICTION TIME VARIANT

To obtain the acceleration due to motion with respect to the Earth, this "gravity offset" must be
subtracted.

GRAVITY OSSSET IS DUE TO the gravitational "force" as experienced locally while standing on a massive
body (such as the Earth) is actually the same as the pseudo-force experienced by an observer in a non-
inertial (accelerated) frame of reference.

Conceptually, an accelerometer behaves as a damped mass on a spring. When the accelerometer

experiences an acceleration, the mass is displaced to the point that the spring is able to accelerate the
mass at the same rate as the casing. The displacement is then measured to give the acceleration.
