Section 2.7 Graphing Inequalities: Ex. 1 Graph 2x + 3y 6

This document provides instructions and examples for graphing different types of inequalities on a coordinate plane. It discusses graphing linear inequalities using slopes and y-intercepts, determining whether the boundary line should be dashed or solid, and shading the appropriate region. Examples are provided for graphing linear inequalities like 3x + 5 < 11 and absolute value inequalities like y > |x| + 1. Practice problems apply the skills to word problems involving employee assignments and SAT tutoring cut-offs.

7 Graphing Inequalities
Boundary – The coordinate plane is separated by a line. This line is called the boundary.

Ex. 1 Graph 2x + 3y > 6

1st- Put the function in the form y = mx = b. ( m = slope) ( b = y-intercept)

2nd- Graph by either plotting points or using the slope and y-intercept.

3rd – determine if it’s a dashed line or a solid line. < or > = - - - - - (dashed line) , ≤ or ≥ =
____________ (solid line)

4th- test the point (0,0) to determine were to shade, in other words what region o shade.

ST1. Graph 3x + 5 < 11

Ex. 2 Graph y ≥ -5

1st- These type of functions are either a horizontal or vertical line. Y – Horizontal and x =
vertical.

2nd- Graph and determine what region to shade.

ST2. Graph x ≤ 6
Absolute value functions- absolute value functions always have a “V” shape

Ex. 3 y > l x l + 1

ST3. Y ≥ l x l - 2

Ex. 4 BUSINESS A mail-order company is hiring temporary employees to help their packing
and shipping departments during their peak season.

a.) Write an inequality to describe the number of employees that can be assigned to each
department if the company has 20 temporary employees available.
Answer_____________________
b.) Graph the inequality
c.) Can the company assign 8 employees to packing and 10 employees?
ST 4. EDUCATION The SAT has two parts. One tutoring company advertises that it specialized
in helping students who have a combined score on the SAT that is 900 or less.

a.) Write an inequality to describe the combined scores of students who are prospective
tutoring clients.
Answer_____________________
b.) Graph the inequality
c.) Does a student with a verbal score of 480 and a math score of 410 fit the tutoring
company’s guidelines?
