VHDL Based Traffic Controllr

This document describes an intelligent traffic controller based on VHDL that uses infrared sensors and LED lights to more efficiently control traffic lights. The current traffic light system gives each lane the same amount of time regardless of traffic volume, causing backups. The proposed system uses infrared sensors to detect vehicle presence and a VHDL program to determine the optimal light sequences based on real-time traffic. It sends signals to LED lights to display the appropriate lights for each lane. This intelligent approach aims to reduce traffic and congestion at busy intersections.

INTELLIGENT TRAFFIC

CONTROLLER BASED ON VHDL

• As the development increase in cities traffic
problems also increasing
• To reduce this problem traffic lights are
arranged in busy junctions
• But unfortunately these traffic lights also
unable to resolve this problem
• The main problem behind the failure is its
working program
• These traffic lights working on the formulae of

• At busy junctions one lane may get more

traffic and another get les traffic
• But time given to pass the vehicles is same
one minute
• That’s why really its a big problem to more
traffic lane
• Our project report is to resolve this problem
• Here we have mainly 3 parts

• Infrared sensor (which acts as input to the

traffic control system)

• V.H.DL based programming in a system (which

is head to the system)

• Light Emitting Diodes (which are o/p to the

system)
• Infrared sensor:
• I.R arranged as shown below
• All objects emit “BLACKBODY RADIATION”

• It is usually infrared radiation that is invisible, detected by

ELECTRONIC DEVICES

• PIR sensors are often used in the construction of PIR-

based motion detectors

• Infrared radiation enters through the front of the sensor,

known as the “sensor face”

• The sensor is often manufactured as part of an integrated

circuit and may consist of one (1), two (2) or four (4)
'pixels' of equal areas of the pyroelectric material.
• These sensors works as input to the traffic
controller system
• Main aim is simulation of electronic designs
and synthesis of such designs
• Synthesis is a process where a VHDL is
compiled and mapped into an implementation
technology such as an FPGA or an ASIC
• VHDL is a hardware description language

• VHDL is used a hardware description language

• These signals are used in ELECTRONIC DESIGN
AUTOMATION

• To describe digital and mixed signal

automation like “Field-programmable gate
arrays” and “integrated circuits”
• In systems design it allows the behavior of the
system to be described (modeled), verified
(simulated) before synthesis tools translate the
design into real hardware (gates and wires).

• VHDL allows the description of a concurrent system

• entity which describes the interface and an

architecture which contains the actual
implementation
• LED(Light Emitting Diodes)
• LEDs are semiconductor devices. Used as
indicator lamps in many devices

• When the diode is forward biased electrons

recombine with holes and releases energy in
the form of photons(ELECTROLUMINESCENE)

• Color of the semiconductor is depends on the

energy gap
• These LED lights are used for replacement for
Incandescent lights, neon indicators and seven
segment displays
• Wave lengths for colors:
COLOR WAVE VOLTAGE(v) SEMICONDUCTOR MATERIAL
LENGTH(MM)

RED 610 < λ < 760

YELLOW < λ < 5900 < λ <

590< 59090

GREEN 500 < λ < 570

• Advantages of using LED technology include:
• High-levels of brightness and intensity
• High-efficiency
• Low-voltage and current requirements
• Low heat
• High reliability (resistant to shock and
vibration)
• No UV Rays
• Can be easily controlled and programmed
• OPERATION:
• Infrared sensor detects the blackbody
radiations emitted by vehicles
• If is there any vehicle present or not sends
data to centralized system
• Then system counts as if vehicle present 1
otherwise 0
• This process can be done at all lanes of that
particular busy junction
• More no. of vehicles “green”
• Second “yellow”
• Remaining “red”
• These instructions are given to LEDs according
to those led lights emits lights
• For example
• CONCLUSION:
• According to above VHDL based traffic
controllers are more better than conventional
traffic controllers
• VHDL based controllers are intelligent and self
decision making
• Their preparation and operation is low cost
and less complexity
• Infrared sensors are sensitive some times may
give false information due to weather change
this is ,main disadv
