A Look at Oil Skimming Technologies

Skimmers are designed to recover oil from land or water in a variety of sizes and types. They can be free floating or mounted on vessels. Skimmers have three main components - a head to separate oil from water, a transfer system like a pump or vacuum to move the oil, and a containment unit like a tank to store the recovered oil. Common skimmer types include drum skimmers, which roll oil into a container; brush and belt skimmers mounted on barges that use a belt to carry oil to a container; and disc skimmers that have rotating discs where the oil sticks and is then scraped off inside the skimmer head.
