• Splitting of Frequency range is
done using one of two methods
• Echo Cancellation.
• FDM assigns one band for
upstream data and another band
for downstream data. The
downstream path is then divided
by time division multiplexing into
one or more high speed channels
and one or more low speed
channels. The upstream path is
also multiplexed into
corresponding low speed
channels. Echo Cancellation
assigns the upstream band to
over-lap the downstream, and
separates the two by means of
local echo cancellation.
• The modulation method used in ADSL method is called discrete multiton
(DMT). It divides the upper frequency spectrum of the telephone line in to
the 256 channels, each 4 KHz wide. Each channel called a bin is designed
to transmit at speeds up to 15 kbits/s per baud or 60kbits/s.
• The upstream signals uses the 4-KHz, and the downstream signals uses
bins in the 138-kHz to 1.1-MHz range.
• How the bandwidth is allocated?
• The bandwidth available to DMT line coding is 26kHz to 1.1MHz.
• This is divided into discrete 4 kHz sub-channels, each hertz of which is
allocated 8 bits and Quadrate Amplitude Modulated (QAM) before
transmission.
• This gives each sub-channel a maximum load of 32kbps
• Now, because the bandwidth has to be divided between upstream and
downstream data transmission, we arrive at the following data rates:
• Upstream = 20 x 8 x 4 kHz = 640 kbps
• Downstream = 256 x 8 x 4 kHz = 8.1Mbps
