Chapter 5: Key Individual Differences and the Road to Success.

Self-Concept
 Person`s recognition of himself as a distinct human being.
 Cognitions a person`s knowledge, opinions/ belief about environment; oneself; one`s
behavior.
 Key to better:
 Parent
 Daughter/ son
 Friend
 Employer
 Employee
 Person

Self-Esteem
 Belief on one`s self worth.
 Employment makes people have high self-esteem.
 It varies with culture
 Collective society- stronger correlation on between self-esteem and life satisfaction,
compared to individualistic society,
 Self-esteem can be improved with support from the environment and thinking of
desirable characteristics which you possess.
Self-Efficacy
 Belief in one`s ability to do a task.
 Increases with acquisition of complex cognitive, social, linguistic, and physical skills.
 High self-efficacy → high success.
Organization Identification
 An employee defines himself with a specific organization.
 Organization values/ belief`s become part of one`s self identity.
 E.g. AMEX- loyalty. Quarter of work force has been in the organization for more than 15
years.
