Assignment # 02

Control Systems (3+1) EE-6 & TE-6

Date of Submission: 30 December, 2015 (Wednesday)
Timing Deadline: Group A (8:30 AM)
Group B (10:00 AM)
Note: No assignment will be accepted after deadline.
1. Consider the unit-step response of a unity-feedback control system:

Obtain the rise time, peak time, maximum overshoot and settling time.
2. Consider the closed-loop system given by

Determine the values of and n so that the system responds to a step input with
a peak time 1.2 sec and settling time of 2 sec. (Use the 2% criterion).
3. Find K and to yield a peak time of 1.5 sec and a 40% overshoot for the given
system.

4. Find K1 and K2 to yield a maximum overshoot of 30 % and a settling time of 2.5

seconds for the given closed-loop systems step response

5. A system shown in figure, find the following

a. The equivalent single block that represents the transfer function T(s) =
C(s)/R(s).
b. The damping ratio, natural frequency, percent overshoot, settling time, peak
time, rise time, and damped frequency of oscillation.

6. For the given circuit, find the following

a. Find the transfer function Eo(s) / Ei(s).
b. If ei(t) is a step voltage in the network shown, find the value of the resistor
such that a 25% overshoot in voltage will be seen across the capacitor if C =
10-6F and L = 3H.

7. Assume that the motor whose transfer function is shown in fig. (a) is used as the
forward path of a closed-loop, unity feedback system.
a. Calculate the percent overshoot and settling time that could be expected.
b. To improve the response found in part (a), Since the motor and the motor
constants cannot be changed, an amplifier and a tachometer (voltage
generator) are inserted into the loop, as shown in fig. (b). Find the values of
K1 and K2 to yield a 16% overshoot and a settling time of 0.2 second.

8. Consider the system shown below; determine the value of k such that the

damping ratio is 0.4. Then obtain the rise time, peak time, maximum
overshoot and settling time in the unit step response.

9. Referring to the system shown in fig below, determine the values of K and k such
that the system has a damping ratio of 0.5 and an damped frequency of oscillation
3.46 rad/sec.
