VISUAL

DESIGN
A UDR EY H ES TE R

C OURSE D ESCRIPTION
Visual Design is a yearlong, project-based curriculum, that develops both career and communication skills
in graphic design using various media applications, including Adobe Illustrator and Photoshop.

C OURSE O BJECTIVE
In Visual Design both individual and group projects will utilize the elements and principles of design (color,
shape, texture, tone and form) in order to develop skills in graphic design, illustration, print and digital
media. Through these projects as well as periodic testing, this course will prepare you to pass the Adobe
Illustrator, Adobe Photoshop, and Adobe InDesign Professional Certification Exams. Each assignment will
focus on at least one element of design while adding more challenging technical skills to foundation
proficiencies. In addition, student projects will greater simulate a professional work environment as the
year progresses. Once a technical foundation has been made, students will gradually migrate from
individual projects to group based client centered work. After the completion of each project, students will
take an open note quiz reflective of the material tested in the Adobe Illustrator, Adobe Photoshop, and
Adobe InDesign Professional Certification Exams.

C OURSE G OALS
By the completion of this course each student will have an online portfolio and be certified in Adobe
Illustrator, Adobe Photoshop and Adobe InDesign.

G RADING R UBRIC
Each student will be evaluated on each project according to individual performance and execution of
assignments.

M ISSED OR L ATE P ROJECTS

Final Projects are due at the end of the class period. If turned in after the assigned deadline, the project
will be considered late, and 10 points will be deducted from the final grade. This point deduction
compounds at the end of each class period until the project is submitted. In addition, projects will be broken
down into phases, each with its own designated due date. No final project will be accepted until the
previous phases have been submitted. I will see your work several times a week for advising sessions, during
which I will provide you one-on-one skill instruction as well as meaningful feedback for your overall
presentation.

P ROFESSIONAL C ONDUCT
As your instructor it is my job to teach you about visual design, part of which includes professional conduct.
The goal of this course is to prepare you to work in a professional environment which means behaving in a

Extra assignment

G OOD B EHAVIOR
It is dependent on everyone to keep our classroom environment respectful, safe and welcoming. Behaving
in a professional manner will result in your conduct grade not being affected, extra credit opportunities,
