Tutorial 5300

This document contains tutorial problems related to anchors and earth retaining structures: 1) It asks to calculate the factor of safety against passive pressure and the tie rod force for a rigid concrete diaphragm wall with given soil parameters. 2) It asks to estimate the factors of safety against horizontal sliding and overturning for a reinforced concrete wall, and how a relieving shelf would change these values using Rankine analysis. 3) It asks to calculate the factor of safety for stability of a trench excavation for a diaphragm wall panel in cohesive soil, and the minimum density required if the soil was sandy, given soil properties and excavation dimensions. 4) It asks to calculate the

Tutorial : Anchors and Earth retaining structures

Note: Make suitable assumptions wherever necessary.

1. For a typical rigid concrete diaphragm wall shown in Figure 1, find the Factor of Safety available
against the passive pressure. Also find the tie rod force. Plot the Shear force diagram and Bending
moment diagram Assume =0, Ka= 0.33, Kp=3

Fig 1

2. For a typical R.C.C wall shown in Figure 2, estimate the Factor of Safety available against horizontal
sliding and overturning. What will be the change in the above F.o.S if a relieving shelf (as shown by
dotted line) is introduced in the wall? Use Rankine analysis.

3. A trench for a diaphragm wall panel measuring 4mx1m in plan is excavated to a depth of 20m. The
trench is stabilized using bentonite slurry having unit weight of 1.1g/cc. Find the F.o.S for stability
of the trench if the soil is cohesive with Cu=20kPa and =20kN/m3. What would have been the
minimum density required if the trench is in sandy strata with =30o. Assume submerged unit weight
as 10kN/m3

4. For a rock anchor shown in Figure 3, find the ultimate uplift capacity based on the data provided.
Assume Yield Stress of steel= 1500MPa, Bond stress (steel-grout) =1000kPa, Bond Stress (groutrock)= 500kPa, Shear strength of rock= 5000kPa
