Welcome To Grade 1: What Is This Unit of Inquiry All About?

This unit introduces Grade 1 students to different types of houses around the world. Students will explore the variety of materials used and house structures in different climate zones and countries. They will read non-fiction books to learn facts about homes, write short pieces about houses, and use a paper doll to learn about houses in different places. Students will also learn about geography, addition and subtraction, and shapes. The central idea is that geographical location determines house types. Parents can support learning by identifying countries on a map and discussing house structures during travel.

How can you support at home?

In this UOI, students are really excited to learn about places and countries around the world. If you
already have a globe or a world map at home, please spend some time with your child to identify some
countries (Thailand, China, USA, Australia...) on the globe or map. We also consider the October break
as a good opportunity for parents to travel with your child to another place and take photos of houses.
Discuss with your child the reasons why the houses are built with that particular structure.
