NFDN 2004 Professional Portfolio

The student learned about prenatal care competencies related to assessing signs and symptoms, calculating expected due dates, and identifying potential risk factors. They found learning how to calculate expected due dates to be particularly interesting. Through studying this course, the student gained a better understanding of why certain assessments are done during prenatal checks and what providers are looking for. They rated their proficiency as "good" but acknowledged they have only book knowledge and no hands-on experience. The student hopes to apply this learning by properly assessing factors like due dates and growth to promote healthy pregnancies in future nursing practice.

When studying; the first four units of this course I realized how much
information I really did not know about maternity. I found all the
information very interesting and informative. The one significant

Rating; Good
I am still learning, and I did not get to do any hands on teaching, or
practice with this skill. I feel that I am able to do figure out what the
expected date of confinement will be but I have not matched it out with
what the doctor has told anyone. Also with no hands on experience it is
hard to check the fundal height, or the auscultation of a fetal heart. I
have a book understanding on how to do things, but no hands on. It
would have been good if I could have practiced on some pregnant
women, but I do not know any one at this moment that is expecting.
One area that I have thought that I would really like to work is Maternity
and or Pediatrics. In this sub-competency it all about assessment of the
pregnant mother to ensure that the outcome of the pregnancy is positive.
As nurses we will need to be able to be able to determine what an
expected date of confinement to be about to understand how far along a
women and what the risks are to the fetus and to the mother. By
assessing the fundal height, we are about to determine whether or not the
baby is growing at the correct rate. By auscultation of the fetal heart we
know the location of baby and is the baby becomes distressed. Also by
identifying any potential risk factors, we are about to suggest preventive
measures to promote a healthy baby. I feel that the main goal of this
competency is to have a healthy mother and infant at the end of the
pregnancy.
