This document contains an assignment for an engineering mechanics course. It includes 4 problems related to forces and trigonometry. Problem 1 involves determining the angle and magnitude of forces on a steel tank positioned in an excavation. Problem 2 involves calculating tensions in cables supporting a load on a pulley. Problem 3 requires determining the magnitude and direction of forces on a boom. Problem 4 is about calculating the vertical force on a transmission tower held by guy wires. Students must submit their solutions by January 11, 2016.

1. A steel tank (Figure 1) is to be positioned in an excavation. Knowing that the
magnitude of P is 500 N, determine by trigonometry (a) the required angle if the resultant R of the two forces applied at A is to be vertical, (b) the corresponding magnitude of R. 2 2. An 1800-N load Q is applied to the pulley C (Figure 2), which can roll on the cable ACB. The pulley is held in the position shown by a second cable CAD, which passes over the pulley A and supports a load P. Determine (a) the tension in cable ACB, (b) the magnitude of load P. 2 3. Knowing that = 55 (Figure 3) and that boom AC exerts on pin C a force directed along line AC, determine (a) the magnitude of that force, (b) the tension in cable BC. 2 4. A transmission tower (Figure 4) is held by three guy wires attached to a pin at A and anchored by bolts at B, C, and D. If the tension in the wire AC is 3.68 kN, determine the vertical force P exerted by the tower on the pin at A. 4
