Lesson Plan

This document outlines a lesson plan for teaching students about arrays using rectangular cereal as a hands-on activity. The lesson plan addresses Virginia standard 2.2.6 on using addition to find the total number of objects in rectangular arrays with up to 5 rows and 5 columns. Students will make cereal arrays, write the corresponding equations, and identify the number of rows and columns. The teacher will introduce the activity by explaining the difference between rows and columns. Students will then create 4 cereal arrays on a paper divided into sections, glue them down, and write the equations and row/column counts. The lesson incorporates small group work and a follow-up worksheet for reinforcement.

Cereal Arrays

Standard(s) of
Learning

2.2.6 The students will use addition to find the total number of objects
arranged in rectangular arrays with up to 5 rows and 5 columns and
write an equation to express the total as a sum of equal addends.

Key Vocabulary/
Concepts

Row, Column, Array(s)

Students will be able to clearly make arrays from a given equation or be able
to tell how many rows and columns are in an array. Also be able to
differentiate between rows and columns.

Materials

Paper, glue, fruit loops, pens/pencils, worksheets, dry erase board, dry erase
marker, colored pencils

Introduction
(Hook)

Ask the kids if they have ever played with their food before. Then tell kids that
today they will be getting to do that exact thing. Before hand out materials.
Ask kids if they get confused with rows and columns, if so start with activity
explaining the difference. Draw picture of a column and show how it goes up
and down just like an array column. Then draw a row boat and show how it
goes side to side like rows in arrays.
Have 6 kids sit around table for about twenty minutes each group. Tell the
kids they will be making their own arrays (or teacher give them to the kids
depending on the group). Give each kid a piece of paper, and have example
readily available. Tell them to write their names on the back and then flip it
over. Have them fold the paper into four sections and label the top of the
paper. Depending on the group give them equations or tell them to make up
their own, give each student a bag of fruit loops and have them make four
arrays with them. Once they have done four, one in each section of the paper,
check their work and then have them glue the fruit loops down. Make sure
they write what the equation is and its value. You can also have the kids write
how many rows are there and how many columns. After they finish give them
some extra fruit loops to eat since they had to glue the fruit loops.

columns, if so start with activity explaining the difference. Draw picture of a

column and show how it goes up and down just like an array column. Then
draw a row boat and show how it goes side to side like rows in arrays. Make
sure you do this activity in small groups so you may offer more help.
If there is time in the small group give each student a worksheet with different
arrays of shapes and pictures. Have them figure out how many rows and
columns are in each. When they finish they can color the pictures.
Students now practice arrays or addition/subtraction during fact practice.
They seem to have a nice understanding of arrays from the practice they
continue to do during class.

REFLECTION
(TO BE COMPLETED
AFTER YOU TEACH)

The students loved this activity, maybe the fruit loop a little too much so I
advise to pair the activity with a worksheet for the students to complete after
they finish. Most students understood the directions and activity when
explained but provide them with an example incase they get lost.

Think about the following as you create the instructional activities for this
lesson

First stepObjectives. What do you want the students to know, understand, and
be able to do by the end of your lesson? What is the point of your lesson?
Learning Styles/Multiple Intelligences
Blooms Taxonomy
Group Work (Cooperative Learning)

Games
Higher-Level Questioning
