Math Chapter 3 Study Guide

This document outlines key lessons from a math chapter on decimals. It discusses place value of decimals from tenths to millionths and how to write decimals in expanded form and words. It also covers estimating products and quotients of decimals using front-end estimation and compatible numbers. Finally, it addresses multiplying and dividing decimals by whole numbers and other decimals, emphasizing the use of estimation to check answers.

Math Chapter 3: Decimals

Key Words:

Tenths : one place behind the decimal

Hundredths: two places behind the decimal
Thousandthsthree places behind the decimal
Ten-Thousandthsfour places behind the decimal
Hundred-Thousandthsfive places behind the decimal
Millionthssix places behind the decimal
Front-end estimationuse the place value of the front digits of a number
Compatible numbersnumbers that are easy to use mentally
Productsanswer to a multiplication question
Quotientsanswer to a division question

Lesson 1: Numbers to Thousandths and Beyond

We learned how to write a place-value chart for numbers that have decimals
We learned all the way up to trillionths, but in grade 6 you only need to know
up to millionths!
Remember to add ths to all of your values. With Decimals Think of Thorin
add the ths!!!!
This is what a place value chart looks like for decimals:

To write it in expanded form: stretch the number out!

To write it in words: Read the decimal as if it were a regular number. Then
say the name of the position of the last digit!

Practice:
Fit this number into a place value chart: 1.238 503
Tell me what this number is in words 2. 671 900
Write this number in expanded form: 12. 362 12

Lesson 2: Estimating Products and Quotients

To estimate and round remember your rhyme: Underline the digit look next
door, If its 5 or higher add one more. If its 4 or lower just ignore!
To use front-end estimationignore the decimals just use the first digit
o Ex) 2.73 would be rounded to 2 using front-end estimation
Compatible numbers are numbers that are easy to use mentally.
o When you round/estimate numbers, you are making them more
compatible

Practice:
Use front-end estimation for the following numbers

5.5
4.8
9.9
2.1

Round the following numbers

29.85
1.3
11.85
19.925

Lesson 3: Multiplying Decimals by a Whole Number

You can use base-ten blocks to multiply

You can do multiplication by hand
You can use your calculator to multiply
A way to check your answers is to round the number with the decimal to
estimate. This will let you know if your answer is logical and realistic.

Practice:
You can estimate how tall a child will be as an adult by doubling their height at 2
years of age. If I was 81.4 cm at age 2 how tall should I be as an adult?
To check your answer:
First estimate the number that has decimals: is 81.4 closer to 81 or 82?
Then multiply by 2

Lesson 4: Multiplying a Decimal less than 1 by a Whole Number

Jensen 2012

Estimate and use compatible numbers to help check your answers

Practice:
Multiply:
0.6 X 4
0.21 X 2
Lesson 5: Dividing Decimals by a Whole Number

You can use long division

You can use your calculator
Use multiplication to check your answer
Use benchmarks or estimation to see if your answer is logical

Lesson 6: Dividing Decimals

Consider the numbers with decimals as moneythat sometimes helps to
image splitting up money equally
Again, estimation will help you to check your answers and make sure that you
are on the right track!

Lesson 7: Dividing a Decimal Less than 1 by a Whole Number

When you are dividing a decimal less than 1 by a whole number, simply
ignore the decimal and divide as you normally would.
Once you find your answer, replace the decimal and any zeros if necessary

Practice:
Dividing with decimals
0.28 7
0.0036

3.05 2
4.24 4
