Lesson Plan Math

This lesson plan teaches 4th grade students about measuring and converting between kilometers, meters, and centimeters. Students will measure various classroom items using a meter stick and record their measurements in a three-column conversion chart. The teacher will demonstrate how to measure and define the metric units. Students will then practice measuring and converting between the units, such as centimeters to meters and kilometers to meters. To assess learning, the teacher will observe students measuring and converting, and collect their completed worksheets.

CCSS.MATH.CONTENT.4.MD.A.1
Know relative sizes of measurement units within one system of units including km, m, cm; kg, g; lb,
oz; l, ml; hr, min, sec. Within a single system of measurement, express measurements in a larger unit
in terms of a smaller unit. Record measurement equivalents in a two-column table.

I. DESCRIPTION OF CONTENT & CONTENT TYPE (Fact, Procedure, Concept, or Principle):

Kilometer, Meter and Centimeter are an equal unit of measure. (Concept)

II. LEARNING OUTCOME (Objective):

Given a meter stick, fork, gift cards, and their own desk, students will understand equal units of measure
by recording measurement equivalents in a three-column table with one-hundred percent accuracy.
DOK Level: 1 because learners are going to measure and arrange numbers into three-column table which
falls under the Recall and Reproduction level
Language Demands
III. CURRICULUM CONNECTION (How lesson fits into larger unit sequence):
Systems of Measure Unit: Preceding lesson-- measurement with Standard System (inches, feet, yard),
Following lesson-- measurement of time (hr, min, sec)
IV. INSTRUCTION
A. ENGAGEMENT (Motivational Activity):
Divide students into groups
Pass out worksheet
Photos of various items will be shown. I will ask them about the difference in size comparison of the
items.
By the end of this lesson you will learn how to measure in centimeters, meters, and kilometers. I will
provide you with a variety of items to measure, and a helpful worksheet, to get you making
comparisons. By the end of the lesson, you should have a clearer understanding of whether to use
centimeters, meters, or kilometers in any given situation.
B. INSTRUCTIONAL SEQUENCE (Teaching Methodology With Student Activities):
1. Define Measure/Distance, cm, m, km
T: Teacher will provide definitions of measurement/distance, cm, m, and km.
T: Measure: the extent, dimensions, quantity, by comparison with a standard
Distance: amount of space between two points
Metric System: system of measure where the basic unit is the meter
Meter: the fundamental unit of length in the metric system
Centimeter: one one-hundreth of a meter
Kilometer: one thousand meters
S: Students will listen to examples and definitions

2. Meter Stick
T: Teacher will demonstrate how to use a meter stick
T: Demonstrate using a meter stick on classroom items
S: Students will practice measuring using the given meter stick
3. Define Converting
T: Teacher will provide definition of converting
T: Convert: to change something into a different form
S: Students will listen to definition and examples
4. cm to m
T: Teacher will explain the process of converting cm to m
T: Demonstrate converting process of cm to m
S: Students will practice converting cm to m
5. m to cm
T: Teacher will explain the process of converting m to cm
T: Demonstrate converting m to cm
S: Students will practice converting m to cm
6. m to km
T: Teacher will explain the process of converting m to km
T: Demonstrate converting m to km
S: Students will practice converting m to km
7. km to m
T: Teacher will explain the process of converting km to m
T: Demonstrate converting km to m
S: Students will practice converting km to m
8. cm to km
T: Teacher will explain the process of converting cm to km
T: Demonstrate converting cm to km
S: Students will practice converting cm to km
9. km to cm
T: Teacher will explain the process of converting km to cm
T: Demonstrate converting km to cm
S: Students will practice converting km to cm
C. APPLICATION ACTIVITY (Practice and/or Reflection):
Students will measure given items and record their findings on a worksheet. They will convert their
findings to fill in the three-column chart.
D. MATERIALS & RESOURCES:
Meter stick, fork, gift card, students desk, worksheet

V. Assessment strategies (methods for obtaining evidence of learning):

Formative
During steps 1 through 8 I will ask for understanding and observe students for comprehension of how to
measure with the meter stick and covert numbers appropriately.
During the application activity, I will walk around to check student responses in regards to measurements
and process of converting measurements appropriately.
Summative
I will collect students worksheets.
VI. ACCOMMODATIONS and/or MODIFICATIONS FOR INDIVIDUAL LEARNERS (Content,
Instruction, Practice):
Accommodations:
List the steps/procedures for multi-step problems and algorithms. Post clearly
numbered steps, and/or give students a desk-copy model of steps needed to solve
problems.
Modifications:
Alternate goal Allow student to provide a reduced number of measurements and
conversions.
VII. HOMEWORK (if appropriate):
