Maternal/Newborn Nursing
Demonstrate knowledge and ability to apply critical thinking and
critical inquiry throughout the nursing process in maternal and
prenatal care.
My significant learning experience for this competency was from
doing the prenatal teaching plan assignment. In this assignment, I was
able to use my critical thinking skills in assessing my clients needs in
order to relay the teaching plan according to her needs. The
assignment required critical thinking as the teaching plan should
correlate with the chosen scenario. I used my critical thinking in
determining the priority goal for her needs. The theory class helped
me a lot in understanding concepts and gaining knowledge which will
guide me in critical thinking. Reading the textbook also played an
important role in gaining knowledge because it provided examples
and scenarios that may happen on an actual setting which broaden my
knowledge in thinking critically.

I learned that critical thinking is a must in taking care of maternal


clients because I am not only taking care of her but also the baby. I

I rate myself as good in this competency because I believe that I


have understood this competency in theory. However, I think that I
still lack experience on an actual clinical setting. I also integrated my
critical thinking skills in scenarios and examples given in class. An
example for this is knowing the necessary assessment during prenatal
care and knowing its significance. I think the knowledge that I have
gained will guide me in thinking critically and provide the best of
care to my client. I can say that I am good in this competency because
I was able to think critically based on the scenario we chose for our
first assignment. I was able to determine the priority nursing goal in
order providing a teaching plan to our client. I achieved this
competency by reading my textbook and going to class.

Using critical knowledge is a must in nursing. At present, I can apply


my learning by providing my client with the correct intervention
based on my health assessment and thinking critically. I can also
integrate my knowledge and critical thinking on our upcoming
clinical. I can use my critical thinking skills in my future nursing
practice by using this as a guide in planning my action of care to my
client. An example for this is when I assess my client during prenatal
care. By using my critical thinking skills, I can identify future
problems that may harm the mother and the baby. This will also help
me in knowing my client more and to think further ahead for the
benefit of their health and their well-being. This will also help me
share my knowledge to my clients and promote a healthy and safe
pregnancy.
