(Virginia Literacy Foundation Block 3)

Objective(s): What do you want children to understand and be able to do after completing this
lesson? (Must be demonstrable)

After this lesson children will be able to:

1. Create a simple AB poem
2. Identify rhyming words ong
3. Identify simple rhythm and flow
Resources/Materials Needed: What resources will the teachers and the children use? NOTE:
each prop must be used at least once in any lesson; but each prop does not have to be used in every
lesson.

Cut out a a picture of each of the items and attached them to magnets (strawberries, blueberries, mud,
water puddle, cat)
Homemade Puppet: (Describe and attach)

Strategies:
1. Introduce vocab words
2. And rhyming words
3. Introduce the book

4. Read enthusiastically

6. Emphazise rhyming and repetition of the words
7. End book with the end

10. Sing songs with children as they dip shoes in color
11. Work with each child as they wash their shoes back to wet
12. Go into language arts activity with a poem
13. Poem using same words as in the book

Support/adaptation for English Language Learners:

1. I would give them a pre set vocab list before hand and maybe some activities to do at home
2. I would bring pictures related to their native language to help them get the connection to my
idea

Support/adaptation for Learner Diversity:

1. I feel like this lesson plan would be a good one for those visually impaired, but may be hard for
those with other problems, such as learning disabilities or hearing disabilities.
2. For hearing disabilities, I could teach rhythm, by vibrations or tapping.
3. For those with slower learning disabilities, I would spend time individually with them and focus
on the main points of the message.

Assessment:
1. Children will write and read aloud a small poem.
2. Children will match rhyming words created in the form of a game.

Analysis/Reflection:
1. Getting creative and making things at home vs using already made props will probably help
with my lesson plans.
2. Working with children that I know or have met will help me tailor plans to meet their needs. I
see this as something I would use on a class I have been working with for awhile rather than a
new class I am starting to teach.

Source of Idea/Information:
Did a similar lesson while I was teaching with a different book- had a bigger response
from reading this book so I turned it into the lesson plane.
