Mixing Time Calculation

The document summarizes the calculation of mixing time for a batch in a mixing tank. It provides the necessary data for the tank and impeller. It then calculates the Reynolds number and determines the power number from a correlation graph. Using these values, it calculates the mixing zone, 95% mixing time, and fully uniform mixing time of 15 minutes, which is concluded to be the time needed for one batch mixing.

2.5.2.1 Calculation of Mixing (Blending) Time

We want to get a truly homogeneous solution (99.99% uniform). Then, we have to
calculate the mixing time for one batch. The following calculation was proposed by Pauline
M. Doran in Bioprocess Engineering Principles (1995).
Data
=995 kg/m 3
=0.0019 kg /ms

D tank=0.135m
H filled =0.14 m
D impeller =0.025 m
N=36.65 rad / s
Calculation of Reynolds Number
First, we have to calculate the Reynolds Number.
2

N Dtank 995 kg /m3 36.65 rad /s ( 0.135 m )

=

=3,36 x 104

0.0019 kg /ms
Calculation of Power Number (Np)
Then, from the Re value, we calculate the Number Power (Np). We use

Figure XX Correlation between Power Number and Reynolds Number

(Source: Bioprocess Engineering Principles, Pauline M. Doran, page 150)
We use the impeller of type number 3. Therefore, looking at Figure XX above, the
power number of our mixing tank is 0.7.
Calculation of Mixing Zone

Mixing Zone=( N p )

Mixing Zone=( 0.7 ) 3 3,36 x 104

Mixing Zone=29833.57 (turbulent)

Calculation of Mixing Time (95% uniformity and turbulent)

t 95 =

5.2 ( Dtank ) ( H tank )

( N p ) 3 N Dimp
t 95 =587.45 seconds
Calculation of Mixing Time (fully uniformity, turbulent)
Then, we can calculate the mixing time for a truly homogeneous solution.
u=99.99
t u =t 95

ln (1u)
=903 seconds=15 minutes
ln ( 0.05 )

Therefore, we can conclude that for one mixing, we need 15 minutes to

get a homogeneous solution.
