Bienvenue au cours de franais !
Bonjour! In this course, you will learn to read, write, speak, and comprehend French at the
novice level. To help you along this process, I will teach you to the best of my ability to help
you achieve in my class. Learning a foreign language is a lot of work, but it can also be fun! I
expect that you will put in the time and effort to learn French and I, in turn, will put in time
and effort to making instruction the best it can be and enjoyable at the same time!

Grading Policy:

Grading will be scaled as such:

93% - 100% A
73% - 76% C
90% - 92% A-
70% - 72% C-
87% - 89% B+
67% - 69% D+
83% - 86% B-
63% - 66% D

Homework (40%)
Homework assignments will be due at the beginning of class and you will turn them
in to the homework tray at the front of the classroom for your specific hour.
Homework will either be graded for completion or accuracy, depending on the
assignment.
Late work will be accepted for only 3 days after the assigned due date. Each day late,
the grade will be docked 10%.
o 1 day late= -10%
o 2 days late= -20%
o 3 days late= -30%
In the event of an absence, you will be allotted the number of days absent to turn in
the assignment. Come speak to me to find out what assignments or work you
missed.
Assessments (30%)
Assessments will include exams and projects.
o Exams (15%)
o Projects (15%)
There will be exams after each unit studied.

The details of projects and papers will be varied and discussed in class before
beginning.
There will be opportunities for test corrections for exams. You will be able to correct
the questions you got wrong on the test and turn it back in within 2 days. You will be
able to receive half the original points for each question corrected.
Quizzes (10%)
There will be quizzes on grammar points, vocabulary, and culture concepts
throughout each semester.
Each quiz will be worth 10 points.
Quizzes can be retaken up to one week after the quiz date. Please arrange a time to
retake quizzes with me at the end of class or after school.

Participation (20%)
Participation is key to advancing your language skills!
Participation means:
o Speaking and staying in French unless otherwise indicated
o Asking questions!
o Being prepared for class - ready to learn and participate
o Coming prepared with all the materials needed such as homework,
notebooks, pencils, and textbook
o Staying on task and working on your assignments
o Being positive and respectful to others!
There are also things that can hurt your participation grade as well
o Speaking English when expected to be speaking French. Trying your best to
stay in French and communicate in French will only help you advance your
language skills!
o Not bringing your homework or materials to class and not being ready to
learn
o Sleeping during class
o Working on other classes assignments or studying for other classes
o Being disrespectful to others and being a distraction in class
Participation will be graded weekly
o At random days (at least once a week), I will hand out a participation
percentage sheet and every time that you speak English (when you should
not be), 10% of your participation grade for that day will be docked.
o There will be exit tickets- certain days where you will be able to grade your
own participation for that day. We will do this every Friday. If you do not
take off points where you should have, double points will be taken off. If I
believe you deserve more points than you gave yourself, I will give the points
that I believe reflect your true grade.
You will be able to give yourself up to 5 points for that day: 2 points
for staying on task and being prepared, 1 point for paying attention
(not on cell phone, not doing other class work, etc.), 2 points for
participating/speaking. Points will be averaged at the end of the
semester and added to the participation grade.

If ever you have questions or concerns about participating in class, come by my classroom
after school or during lunch! If you cannot make it during those times, we can arrange
another time/way to meet to discuss participation and meeting the requirements. I am
reachable via email at [email protected].

Grades for any assignments, assessments, and participation will be posted weekly on
PowerSchool. I will also always hand back assignments the day after and assessments 2-3
days after.

Classroom Policies:

Our classroom will be a place where everyone feels safe to learn and thrive as a foreign
language learner. In addition to the school policies on student conduct and behavior, there
are a few classroom policies that students are expected to follow:
Entering the classroom:
o When you enter the classroom, find your seat
and get started on the bell ringer for that day
projected on the board.
En franais sil vous plat:
o This is a French class, so we will be speaking French! It not only is
beneficial to you as a French language learner, but it is important to be able
to participate actively and effectively. There will be moments when English is
allowed and that will be made clear. Other than these certain moments, you
are expected to try your best to formulate questions, answers, comments,
and so forth in French. Remember: it is okay to make mistakes! We learn
through making mistakes J
Cellphone use:
o Cell phones will not be allowed in class unless they are used for a specific
activity. Cell phones will need to be put in backpacks/bags at the beginning of
the class. Visible cell phones will be confiscated for the hour.
Respect:
o Everyone will be respected and everyone will respect one another. That
means we will not judge others for any reason. This classroom will be a safe
learning environment where everyone can speak and be heard.
Effort:
o To excel in a foreign language, effort is a big component. You need to work
hard to improve your language skills! Therefore, you are always expected to
try your best and ask lots of questions!

Consequences to not following procedures and expectations include, but are not limited to:
lowered participation grade, detention, or calling/writing home.
