Ella Fitzgerald had a difficult childhood after her mother died, being sent to a reform school where she suffered abuse. At age 17 she had a breakthrough singing at the Apollo Theater in Harlem. She went on to have a successful jazz singing career, recording over 200 albums and performing with famous artists like Louis Armstrong and Frank Sinatra. Fitzgerald was known as the "Queen of Jazz" and brought joy to people with her music despite struggling earlier in life. She died in 1996 from injuries in a car accident.

Born April 25,1917; she was born in Newport, Virginia.


After her parents parted, she stayed with her mother
they moved to Yonkers, New York. Her mother later
found a boyfriend and had Ellas half-sister in 1923.Her
mother died in 1932, in a car accident, soon after her
stepfather died of a heart attack, and her half sister went
with her to their aunts house. The loss of her mother
made her unhappy, her grades dropped and she kept
getting in trouble with the police.

How Her Struggle Helped Her


After getting arrested,

Eventually she escaped,
at the age of fifth teen
she was broken and
alone during the Great
Depression.

Before her death in 1986 she was diagnosis


with diabetes. By the 1990s, Ella had recorded
over 200 albums. In 1991, she gave her final
concert at New York's renowned Carnegie Hall.
It was the 26th time she performed. She was
put to sleep in the Sanctuary of the Bells"
section of the Sunset Mission Mausoleum at
Inglewood Park Cemetery in Inglewood,
California. She died in 1996, in a car accident.
