This document discusses dependent sources in network analysis. There are four types of dependent sources: voltage dependent voltage source, current dependent voltage source, voltage dependent current source, and current dependent current source. To solve problems involving dependent sources using mesh or nodal analysis, the first step is to find the value of the controlling parameter of each dependent source. For mesh analysis, this involves assigning current directions and polarities, then applying Kirchhoff's voltage law to each mesh loop. For nodal analysis, the dependent source values must be in terms of voltages and then Kirchhoff's current law is applied at each node. Solved examples are provided to illustrate these concepts.

DEPENDENT SOURCES
Dependent sources are of 4 types:
i)
ii)
iii)
iv)

Voltage dependent voltage source.

Current dependent voltage source.
Voltage dependent current source.
Current dependent current source.

Now we will learn how to solve problems of mesh and Nodal analysis which
contains dependent sources.
Steps to solve Mesh containing dependent sources:
Step 1:
REMEMBER THIS:Let it be any type of dependent source, first thing that we should do is to find
the value of the controlling parameter of that dependent source.
HOW TO FIND THE VALUE OF DEPENDENT SOURCE?
1) Assign the current in each mesh in any direction (anticlockwise
recommended)
2) Let's consider two cases:
Case i)

Network Analysis

Dependent Sources

Theory

Here we have current dependent voltage source.

Now, we have to find the value of controlling parameter of this voltage
source. i.e. Iy.
So from mesh 1 and 2 we get,
IY = I 1 I2
------(1)
Case ii)

KEY NOTE:
Earlier in mesh analysis of independent sources, we have learnt how
to assign the polarities across the voltage source and across the resistors.
So lets assign the polarities over here.

Now, the important part comes.

Guys in school we have learnt in maths that

Apply the same concept here,

We have encircled the current leaving point of the resistor.
Apply the same concept of school inside that circle and if the answer turns
out to be,
-> Negative (- ve) as in mesh 1, then we can write V1 as,
V1 = (-)I1R1
And if the answer turns out to be
-> Positive as in mesh 2, then we can write V2 as,
V2 = (+)2I2
Mind the above 2 cases properly while finding the value of dependent
sources.
Step 2) After finding the value of dependent sources. Now apply KVL to
each mesh and then solve the simultaneous equation to get the value of
branch current.

Nodal Analysis with Dependent sources

Like mesh analysis, here also first we have to find out the value of
dependent sources.
But those values should be in terms of voltage as we are dealing in voltage
in nodal analysis.
After finding the value of dependent sources, apply KCL to each node and
solve the simultaneous equation to get the value of node voltages.
For better understanding of this concept have a look at the solved examples
based on this concept in the solved section of the topic.
