Mental Swordplay
Mental Swordplay
Few things are as valuable mental swordplay - - e.g., argument, analysis, criticism - and for several reasons. One, at the most basic level, its a primary mode of learning.
Two, it also provides an important way of coming to understand things over time; i.e.,
not simply when theyre happening, but later, upon reflection. And finally, in a broader
sense, this kind of mental jousting or whatever you want to call it (rationality, analyticity,
etc.) is simply an essential way of coping with life and all varieties of its challenges. You
can depend on it to get you through, and you can depend on it to manage your getting
through. If at times you find yourself slipping into faulting others for not relying on or
seeming to value mental swordplay in this way, thats okay; just remind yourself that in
doing so, youre the one who is wrong - - not them. Mental swordplay isnt for everyone.
But for those who understand its value, as well as its limitations, its a powerful aid in
growing mentally and emotionally. Give it a try. Just use your superpowers wisely.
