Activating Prior Knowledge
Have the students analyze images of designs from the
Aztec people in order to identify some common themes
amongst each of the designs at their tables. This should
go for approximately 30 seconds to 1 minute.
Hook/Lead-In/Anticipatory Set
A PowerPoint presentation that shows the students
about the different class levels of the Aztec civilization
and how they would trade blankets with these designs

Write the homeroom number on the back of
the construction paper.
Transition
Have the students head back to their seats and call
them up by the color of their seats (red, blue, green, and
yellow) to gather their materials to begin working. They
will need a 6 by 6 sheet of white paper, a ruler, pencil,
and colored pencils.
Guiding the Practice
Walk around the classroom and help correct the students
who are having any difficulties.
Providing the Independent Practice
Students will then create a 6 by 6 Aztec design on the
paper provided to them and then color it in with pencil.

Summary & Review of the Learning
o Have them discuss the most interesting fact about
the Aztec people is that they have learned today
and why was it so interesting.
Homework/Assignments
No homework
1. Students discuss the pictures of the Aztec patterns and try
to find the common thing among all of them. (The Aztec
people used triangles in their work and mostly used bold
colors). (30 seconds 1 minute)
2. Then they will view a PowerPoint about how the Aztec
people created their blankets and why they used such bold
colors. (There are comments on the PowerPoint that can be
read) (3-5 minutes)
3. Explain to them what we are going to do today. (At end of
the presentation)
4. Demonstrate the lesson (5 minutes)
a. This should all be under 10 minutes
5. Send them back to their seat but first ask them to remind
you what the first step will be that they will start when they
get their materials
6. Give them 10 minutes to complete the outline for their
Aztec squares
7. Pass out the colored pencils and give them another 10
