Introduction
Activating Prior Knowledge
Have the students analyze images of designs from the
Aztec people in order to identify some common themes
amongst each of the designs at their tables. This should
go for approximately 30 seconds to 1 minute.
Hook/Lead-In/Anticipatory Set
A PowerPoint presentation that shows the students
about the different class levels of the Aztec civilization
and how they would trade blankets with these designs

Big Idea Statement
Aztec art is important in art history because their bold
use of color and designs have influenced us even today.
Essential Questions
Why were these beautifully done blankets such an
important part of the Aztec civilization?
What is the common shape amongst the Aztec designs?
How were the Aztec people able to create such bold
colors in their blankets?
Key Vocabulary
Design an arrangement of lines or shapes created to
form a pattern or decoration.

Demonstration of the Aztec design process.
1. Take 1 6 by 6 piece of white paper.
2. Write your name and homeroom on the back.
3. Then take a ruler and set it down on the paper
lining up with one of the edges.
4. Extend our fingers out so that the thumb and your
index finger on your left hand are as far from each
other as possible.
5. Set those two fingers down on the ruler and take
your pencil in your right hand and draw a straight
line.
6. Then place the side of the ruler that was at the
edge of the paper on the line you just drew and
draw another straight line. (See picture below)
7. Do step 6 until you have reached the end of the
paper
8. Then starting with the top line, pick a pattern out
from the paper from your table and use it to create
your own design.
9. Then the students will move down through the
spaces that they have just created picking
different designs and recreating them on their
paper.

Then they will take colored pencils and color
in the triangles that they have created to give it
color. (Stress that the Aztec people used bold color
in their work to make it stand out among other
blankets)

Then each piece will be glued down to a
larger sheet of paper that will be 18 in height by
48 wide. There will be tape between the two
sheets of 18 by 24 pieces of construction paper
to hold all of the classes together.

Write the homeroom number on the back of
the construction paper.
Transition
Have the students head back to their seats and call
them up by the color of their seats (red, blue, green, and
yellow) to gather their materials to begin working. They
will need a 6 by 6 sheet of white paper, a ruler, pencil,
and colored pencils.
Guiding the Practice
Walk around the classroom and help correct the students
who are having any difficulties.
Providing the Independent Practice
Students will then create a 6 by 6 Aztec design on the
paper provided to them and then color it in with pencil.

Summary & Review of the Learning
o Have them discuss the most interesting fact about
the Aztec people is that they have learned today
and why was it so interesting.
Homework/Assignments
No homework
1. Students discuss the pictures of the Aztec patterns and try
to find the common thing among all of them. (The Aztec
people used triangles in their work and mostly used bold
colors). (30 seconds 1 minute)
2. Then they will view a PowerPoint about how the Aztec
people created their blankets and why they used such bold
colors. (There are comments on the PowerPoint that can be
read) (3-5 minutes)
3. Explain to them what we are going to do today. (At end of
the presentation)
4. Demonstrate the lesson (5 minutes)
a. This should all be under 10 minutes
5. Send them back to their seat but first ask them to remind
you what the first step will be that they will start when they
get their materials
6. Give them 10 minutes to complete the outline for their
Aztec squares
7. Pass out the colored pencils and give them another 10

minutes to color them in


8. As they finish have them bring up their squares to glue
down to the larger paper
9. Write homeroom on the back of it
10. Clean up
11. Close with having them discuss their most interesting
feature of the Aztec people
