For this assignment, I participated in Mr. Bustillos interdisciplinary group for WWII. During that week, my group
mate and I worked on creating a script, and later recording it using the TV studio, about the film Grave of the Fireflies.
We started by watching the film online, and researching the historical background of the films relation to WWII, learning
about the battle of Kobe, the bombing that inspired the film. Later, we developed a script to express our views on the film
and its relation to WWII. Eventually, the two of us used the TV Studio equipment to record our short video, using the
switchboard to change cameras and fade in short clips from the original film. As with all other interdisciplinary, we had to
opportunity to share of work with the rest of the Freshman year during the celebration concluding the week. Like my other
portfolio pieces from Freshman year, I do not believe that I have changed because of this assignment. However, this
assignment has helped with the process of learning to be conformable on camera, a skill I believe I should develop to
succeed both in the CAP program and later in life. This assignment forced me out of my comfort zone, something I
believe is necessary in the process of development. This process will also help me later in the academic year, as I am now
conformable with the TV studio and cameras, a skill I can use later on this year in TV Production when we delve further
into the recording process.
This project exemplified my strength of research. My partner and I were able to find our film online, watch it, and
complete our search for background knowledge within the first three hour block. We were able to work well as a team
during scriptwriting, a skill that I am slowly cultivating, as referenced in a previous portfolio entry. I believe that this
assignment is proof of my willingness to grow and my ability to thrive, even when placed in a situation when I am not
confident. As a mostly independent learner, each interdisciplinary is a reminder on both how far Ive come from being
drastically shy and how I can improve my relations with others in a learning environment. As well, I am not skilled in the
area of appearing onscreen. In general, the process makes me nervous and self-conscious. In my group of two, both my
partner and I were required to appear reading our script on Grave of the Fireflies. At the start of the week, I was not happy
to partake in this activity, but realized that I would have to grin and bear it as an old expression says. While it was
obvious in my opinion that I did not enjoy speaking on-camera, a clear example of a weakness of mine, I believe that this
assignment also proved my ability to perform well under pressure/stress, a skill that I will believe will help me in my
academic journey.
