CVG2140 - Tutorial 4 (Axial Members)

This document contains 5 mechanics of materials problems: 1. Determine the displacement of end A of a copper shaft subjected to axial loads, where the shaft has different diameter segments. 2. Determine the angle of tilt of a rigid bar connected to three titanium rods with a force applied to a ring. 3. Determine the elongation of a bar due to an applied force and its own weight, given the material properties. 4. Determine the diameter of a steel post that will share a load equally with a surrounding brass tube. 5. Determine the stress in concrete and steel reinforcing rods in a post under an axial load, given material properties.

Mechanics of Materials I

Winter 2016

1. The copper shaft is subjected to the axial loads shown. Determine the displacement of end A with
respect to end D. The diameters of each segment are dAB = 3 in, dBC = 2in, and dCD = 1 in. Take Ecu =
18103 ksi.

2. The assembly consists of three titanium (Ti-6A1-4V) rods and a rigid bar AC. The cross-sectional area
of each rod is given in the figure. If a force of 6 kip is applied to the ring F, determine the angle of tilt
of bar AC.

3. The bar has a length L and cross-sectional area A. Determine its elongation due to the force P and its
own weight. The material has a specific weight (weight/volume) and a modulus of elasticity E.

4. The 304 stainless steel post A is surrounded by a red brass C83400 tube B. Both rest on the rigid
surface. If a force of 5 kip is applied to the rigid cap, determine the required diameter d of the steel
post so that the load is shared equally between the post and the tube.

5. The concrete post is reinforced using six steel reinforcing rods, each having a diameter of 20 mm.
Determine the stress in the concrete and the steel if the post is subjected to an axial load of 900 kN.
The elastic moduli for the steel and concrete are respectively Est = 200 GPa and Ec = 25 GPa.
