Reading - Informational Text

Key Ideas and Details

RI3.1 Ask and answer questions to demonstrate

understanding of a text, referring explicitly to the text as the
basis for the answers.
RI3.2 Determine the main idea of a text; recount the key
details and explain how they support the main idea.
RI3.3 Describe the relationship between a series of historical
events, scientific ideas or concepts, or steps in technical
procedures in a text, using language that pertains to time,
sequence, and cause/effect.

Craft and Structure

RI3.6 Distinguish their own point of view from that of the

author of a text.

Range of Reading &

Text Complexity

RI3.10 - By the end of the year, read and comprehend

informational texts, including history/social studies, science,
and technical texts, at the high end of the grades 2-3 text
complexity band independently and proficiently.

Reading - Foundational Skills

RF3.4a Read grade-level text with purpose and understanding
RF3.4b Read grade-level prose and poetry orally with accuracy, appropriate rate, and
expression on successive readings.
RF3.4c Use context to confirm or self-correct word recognition and understanding,
rereading as necessary.

Speaking and Listening Skills

SL3.1a Come to discussions prepared, having read or studied required material;
explicitly draw on that preparation and other information known about the topic to explore
ideas under discussion.
SL3.1b Follow agreed-upon rules for discussions (e.g. gaining the floor in respectful
ways, listening to others with care, speaking one at a time about the topics and texts
under discussion)
SL3.1c Ask questions to check understanding of information presented, stay on topic,
link their comments to the remarks of others

Language
L3.1i - Explain the function of nouns, pronouns, verbs, adjectives, and adverbs in general
and their functions in particular sentences.
L3.2f Use spelling patterns and generalizations (e.g., word families, position-based
spellings, syllable patterns, ending rules, meaningful word parts) in writing words.
L3.3a Choose words and phrases for effect.
L3.3b Recognize and observe differences between the conventions of spoken and
written standard English.
L3.5a Distinguish the literal and nonliteral meanings of words and phrases in context
(e.g.,take steps).
L3.6 Acquire and use accurately grade-appropriate conversational, general academic,
and domain-specific words and phrases, including those that signal spatial and temporal
relationships (e.g., After dinner that night we went looking for them).

Writing
W3.3a Write narratives to develop real or imagined experiences or events using
effective technique, descriptive details, and clear event sequences. Establish a situation
and introduce a narrator and/or characters; organize an event sequence that unfolds
naturally.
W3.3b Use dialogue and descriptions of actions, thoughts, and feelings to develop
experiences and events or show the response of characters to situations.
W3.3c Use temporal words and phrases to signal event order.
W3.3d Provide a sense of closure.
W3.4 - With guidance and support from adults, produce writing in which the development
and organization are appropriate to task and purpose.
W3.10 -Write routinely over extended time frames (time for research, reflection, and
revision) and shorter time frames (a single sitting or a day or two) for a range of
discipline-specific tasks, purposes, and audiences.

Mathematics
Develop understanding
of fractions as
numbers

3.NF.1 - Understand a fraction 1/b as the quantity

formed by 1 part when a whole is partitioned into b equal
parts; understand a fraction a/b as the quantity formed
by a parts of size 1/b.
3.NF.2 - Understand a fraction as a number on the
number line; represent fractions on a number line
diagram.
3.NF.3 - Explain equivalence of fractions in special
cases, and compare fractions by reasoning about their
size.

Reason with shapes

and their attributes

3.G.2 - Partition shapes into parts with equal areas.

Express the area of each part as a unit fraction of the
whole. For example, partition a shape into 4 parts with

equal area, and describe the area of each part as 1/4 of

the area of the shape.

Solve problems
involving measurement
and estimation of
intervals of time, liquid
volumes, and masses
of objects

3.MD.1 - Tell and write time to the nearest minute and

Represent and
Interpret Data

3.MD.4 - Generate measurement data by measuring

measure time intervals in minutes. Solve word problems

involving addition and subtraction of time intervals in
minutes, e.g., by representing the problem on a number
line diagram.
3.MD.2 - Measure and estimate liquid volumes and
masses of objects using standard units of grams (g),
kilograms (kg), and liters (l).1 Add, subtract, multiply, or
divide to solve one-step word problems involving masses
or volumes that are given in the same units, e.g., by
using drawings (such as a beaker with a measurement
scale) to represent the problem.
lengths using rulers marked with halves and fourths of
an inch. Show the data by making a line plot, where the
horizontal scale is marked off in appropriate units
whole numbers, halves, or quarters.
