Reflections from
the lesson

The lesson went pretty well. There were definitely a few snares but I was
impressed with how well some positive reinforcement worked today. I
wanted to focus on positive reinforcement and I stood by the Pay Day
Board and began giving people a plus for behaving how I expected. I gave
the students warnings that they wouldnt be getting a plus! Ha! It was
actually kind of awkward giving a warning that others would be getting a
plus and you wouldnt haha But as soon as I stood by that board and
started putting some plus signs, everyone became instantly silent.
Having the students come in and get their laptops immediately worked
much better. The students were logged in and all set up and ready to go
much faster than they were a couple of days ago.
MRS ----It seems her class usually does much better for listening during
instruction. It probably helps that I have already taught the lesson once
and learned what I did wrong the first time
I have a difficult time getting anything out of ----. I dont feel like he listens
to a single word that comes out of my mouth. I had a chat with him after
class to see where we stood in our relationship. I asked him if it was a
problem that he had with me or is it just something that we need to work
on. I also asked him if there was something that I could do to help! We
made a deal that he would try to do better for next class and I would
follow up with him.
I realized today that I overestimate what we are capable of doing in grade
5. I thought for sure we would be able to have these journal entries done

in a single class but it wasnt true for either one of my classes. In fact, I
have a lot of students that are still on the first sentence! I will need to
adjust my lessons to less lecture and more activity time or do a better job
of time adjusting for my activities.
