Finding Article
Before I started to look for my article, I thought that suicide prevention would be an easy
topic to find an intervention about. Shockingly, I had a difficult time finding the one that I
exactly wanted. The intervention study that I found wasnt exactly what I was looking for, but I
believe that it still fits. I wanted to find an intervention that offered counseling to students who
were suicidal and medication to see which one was more effective. The intervention that I found
was a program that was given to high school students about suicide to make them become more
aware.
When I found this article, my first step was to go to the wayne.edu website. I then clicked
on library. After getting to the library page, I clicked on research guide and then clicked social
work. When I got to the social work library, I clicked on article data base, then psych info. I
typed in the words suicide adolescence intervention. I found the intervention, Effectiveness of
the Surviving the Teens Suicide Prevention and Depression Awareness Program: An Impact
Evaluation Utilizing a Comparison Group.
Overview
This intervention was a school based intervention. The program was delivered in health
classes in four 50 minute sessions for four days straight. The students were taught about different
risk factors about being suicidal and signs to look for in a friend that may be suicidal. The
program was offered to grades 9-12 in 9 different high schools. They received the Surviving the
Teen Suicide Depression Awareness Program pretest/posttest survey. The comparison group was
the same age and grade. In five of the schools the program was delivered after completing the
pretest and posttest survey. They wanted to see the effectiveness of pretest and posttest.
PHASE 2
If a student reported to be suicidal the parents were informed and the students were then
taking to the ER right away. This intervention can help improve different suicide warnings and
can make students aware of the signs. This can help students because suicide is the 3rd most
leading cause in death among adolescents.
