Evaluation Activity 7

The document discusses the learning process from a preliminary media production task to the final production. Some key lessons learned include properly using audio equipment to capture synchronous sound, strictly adhering to the 180-degree rule for continuity editing, and utilizing a variety of shots, editing techniques, and mise-en-scene elements to further the narrative and genre conventions. Mistakes in the preliminary task included issues with sound and mistakenly including a blooper during editing. These lessons were applied to successfully create intensity and meaning through sound, cinematography, and mise-en-scene in the final horror-genre media piece.

EVALUATION ACTIVITY 7: LOOKING BACK AT YOUR

PRELIMINARY TASK, WHAT HAVE YOU LEARNT IN THE

PROGRESSION OF THIS TO THE FINAL PRODUCTION?
BY ELISE
THOMPSON

WHAT HAVE I LEARNT FROM THE

PRELIMINARY TASK?
I had studied Media Studies at a GCSE level meaning I had received a
amateur experience with the camera equipment we had used and also had
knowledge of differing shots available for us to use. The main thing I have
learnt is how and why to use the 180 degree rule in order to create
continuity editing. Throughout the preliminary task it was important for us
to take good care of the equipment and ensure that we completed all of the
tasks required for the task.

WHAT MISTAKES WERE MADE?

The first time we filmed we had an issue with the sound this was because
we had forgotten to use headphones to ensure the sound was audible. This
created issues because we had to re-film our entire production in order to
input this sound making it synchronous to the on-screen action. Therefore,
we had to film again ensuring we used headphones to capture the sound
for our production. The filming went perfectly fine we tried our best to stick
to the 180 degree rule and even included a focus pull. However, in the
editing process some mistakes were made, the editor did not cut out were
the director had said action and accidentally included a blooper within the
sequence that faulted the continuity editing. We did not realise the mistake
until we had published it onto Youtube and therefore we did not have time
to rectify our mistake.

CINEMATOGRAPHY
We realised that we had broken the 180 degree rule within our preliminary
task and therefore as a crew we strictly tried to abide by the 180 degree
rule in order to allow continuity editing. We also involved a focus pull after
successfully completing it in the preliminary task, we used this to show the
examiner that we can successfully add a range of elements within our
production. For our actual production we used a much wider variety of
shots mainly because we had to create a montage of shots to build the
intensity towards the final scene. We also focused on ensuring some of our
shots created forms of enigmas and semiotics, whereas, within our
preliminary task we just used a variety of shots to just make the narrative
progress. For both our preliminary and final production we used POV shots
we thought that it looked good the fist time and therefore input it within
our sequence again.

EDITING
Within the preliminary we also learnt the effect of match-on action and how
important it is for developing the narrative and therefore we ensured that
we had consecutive shots to ensure the narrative progressed in a
synchronous manner. We also had to use slow and fast pace editing, we
used fast pace editing within the montage to build up the tension towards
the final shot sequence, and we used slow pace editing right at the
beginning in order to proliferate the enigma of the very first shot. For both
the preliminary and final production we used simple straight cuts in order
to make cuts between scenes that were simple to not distract the audience
from the action.

MISE-EN-SCENE
For our preliminary we were not concerned about the mise-en-scene at all
as we did not have a genre in which we had to make sure our mise-enscene fit within the conventions of, we simply used an available location
and used the costumes that the characters were dressed in at the time.
Within our final production we had to ensure the mise-en-scene was able to
portray certain messages to the audience for example the fact the
protagonist was dressed in white portray her as innocent and the
antagonist dressed in black to present him as evil. We also had to use a
bedroom location in order to carry out the sexual activities used in the
stage direction.

SOUND
Within our preliminary task we used the simple diegetic sound of dialogue
just to progress the narrative and create a clear reason for the shotreverse-shots. For our actual production we chose to not use any dialogue
to bring the audiences attention to the horrific stage direction and onscreen action, instead we simply chose to use a non-diegetic soundtrack to
contrast with the action on screen adding to the horror of the sequence. We
also used diegetic ambient sound in order to add to the intensity of the
scene sounds like a siren to intensify the violence within the scene it was
also used to foreshadow the fact that the protagonist will need the
emergency services after getting hit by the car.
