Sentence Openers

1) Subject (tells us who?)


The shaggy wet dog, trotted across the busy city street.
He was a quiet little man in a strange green suit.
2) Prepositional (tell us where?)
In a flash, the shocked youngster dashed home.
Up above in the village, Sarah gazed at the passing clouds.
3) Ly adverbs describe the action (tell us how?)
Calmly, she explained why we couldnt go to the park.
Beautifully, the sun gently sat upon the mountain.
4) Ing verb, action word (tells us what the character is doing?)
Walking quickly away, the girl did not want to play.
Jumping up and down, the children begged for the candy.
5) Clausal www.asia (When, Where, While, As, Since, If, Although)
When he got home, Jareds pooch met him at the door.
As long as she lived, she would never forget that day.
6) VVS very short sentence = 5 words or less
The car stopped.
She ran.
Dress-Ups
1) Because clause
The horse neighed because he saw the pail of oats.
2) Strong verb
On his bed the boy bounced and tumbled.
3) Quality Adjective
The lovely proud princess looked sadly out the window.
4) Ly word
Waling quickly away, the girl hurried home.
5) Clausal www.asia (When, Where, While, As, Since, If, Although)
Jacks dog barked, when he opened the door.
6) Who/Which Clause
The man, who was very strong, opened the locked door.

Decorations
1) Simile comparing two things using like or as
She was light as a feather
2) Metaphor describing something as being something else
He had a heart of stone
3) Alliteration repeating the same sound in a sentence
Sally sat and stared, starry-eyed.
4) The 3 SSS 3 short staccato sentences.
The water rippled.
A head surfaced.
5) Question
Who was tricked?
6) Dramatic Opening and Closing a short dramatic sentence to begin
and end the story.
Hungry flames roared. (Opening)
The building lay in ashes. (Closing)
