TKT Module 1 Unit 6

Writing
Key Concepts
Writing is a productive skill. This means it involves
producing language rather than simply receiving it.
Writing is comprised of several subskills in two categories. The
first set is related to accuracy:

Spelling
Legibility
Punctuation
Using the correct layout
Appropriate vocabulary
Grammar
Joining sentences
Paragraphs

The second set is more difficult to define but focuses on

communication:

Writing formal and informal letters

Writing about opinions
Discursive/argumentative writing
Poetry writing
Summarizing a larger text
Storytelling

There are many more communicative writing activities than

this. Can you think of an involving way to use writing with a
class as a group activity?
Remember: Gap filling and sentence correcting is a
convenient and common way to test vocabulary and grammar
but does not really involve writing as a skill. Writing practice is
more about learners producing whole texts, with an emphasis
on communication, accuracy or both where appropriate.
Task: What do the following terms mean, how do they relate
to writing activities in the classroom?

Brainstorming

Note-taking

Planning

Drafting

Editing

Proof reading
