How Does Your Media Product Represent Particular Social

The document discusses how social groups are represented in a film opening. It represents teenagers through the protagonist and antagonist who are ages 17-18. The lone male, the antagonist, is portrayed as intimidating and dominating through shots that make him seem physically superior, conforming to stereotypes of males in horror films. The female protagonist seems vulnerable as the victim of the antagonist, portrayed through shots that make her seem smaller, again conforming to stereotypes. However, she also shows rebellion by leaving school, subverting the typical stereotype of passive females.

Social Groups Present in our Film

Opening

Within our film opening only identify, with regards to age, teenagers,,
this is through our protagonist and our antagonist. We did this so the
audience can relate more to the characters as they are between the
ages of 17-18. Overall we portrayed the antagonist to be rebellious and
antagonising as he is harming the protagonist.

Yet with relations to our protagonist she highlights her stereotypical

rebellion streak normally associated with teenagers as she leaves
school to go to party.

Male Representation

As the only male in our film opening is our antagonist it sets forth a bad
representation of the male gender. He is perceived as being intimidating
and more dominating, this is shown through our wide shots and point of
view shots as it heightens and emphasises the fact that hes broad and
tall. His costume also accompanies these theories. Within this we are
conforming to the typical representation of males in horror/thriller films
as they need to be more superior in comparison to the vulnerable,
which is usually portrayed by females.

Frequently we also use the Male Gaze to further suggest how men are
controlling.

Representing Females

In our film, as the protagonist is the one being harmed she brings-forth
the stereotype of females being vulnerable. Therefore we are abiding
the typical theories of females being vulnerable and the weaker sex in
comparison to male; yet this is only a perception through the story line
and the use of shots to make her seem much smaller. This is identifiable
with the last shot of our protagonist on the floor, with the point of view
shot and it being a high angle shot as well illustrates his dominance and
power more in comparison to her being on the floor made of look small
and vulnerable.

With relations of females as well, we made her apply makeup[p and

wear natural makeup which is also another stereotype of the female
gender.

Subversion of Stereotype

Despite us typically abiding to the usual stereotypes in a film, we can

also identify the opposing factors. We believe that despite our female
character being in danger and vulnerable throughout the entirety of the
film opening, she shows her capability of subverting the typical
stereotype by leaving school and making her way to a party, this
rebellion streak is usually associated with males within films.
