High Frequency Data Link

HFDL provides cost-effective data link coverage for aircraft where SATCOM is unavailable by using HF radio signals. It has wide global coverage through multiple ground stations and can communicate on several frequency bands simultaneously. While it uses proven avionics technology and has high network availability, it has low data rates making it unsuitable for high-speed wideband communications. HFDL uses PSK modulation at data rates from 300-1800 bps depending on conditions, and employs FDM and TDM to create individual communication channels.

HFDL

Coverage provides at highly cost

effective data link capability where
SATCOM coverage is unavailable.
Today HFDL are offered as original
equipment by all the major airframe
manufactures.

Aircraft Operational Control

at Various Stage

Advantages

Advantages :
- wide coverage due to the extremely long range of
HF signal
- Simultaneous coverage on several bands and
frequency (currently 60)
- Multiple ground station (currently 14) at strategic
location around the globe
- Relative Simple avionics using well tried
technology
- Rapid network acquisition
- Exceptional network availabity

Disadvantage

Very low data rates (making the system

unsuitable for high speed wideband
communications)

HFDL uses Phase Shift Keying (PSK) at

data rates of 300, 600 1200 and 1800
bps.
Data rate used is dependent on
prevailing condition
HFDL based on frequency division
multiplexing (FDM) and time division
multiplexing (TDM) with individual
communication channel
