Mr. M
Part 1:
I chose for my online assessment to be a multiple choice quiz about
the parts of speech. My target grade would be second grade and I feel like
giving them a multiple choice quiz will allow them to see the difference
between answer options and use the process of elimination. My assessment
is formative because it is not an organized or structured assessment. I am
simply just giving a short five question quiz to see what level my students
are at when it comes to parts of speech. When I was in school I really
enjoyed it when my teachers would give small multiple choice tests versus
benchmark tests. There is so much pressure that is put onto the students
when it comes to testing and I want to make my students feel comfortable
with the tests that I give them and not scare them away.
Part 2: Blog Post
Introduction
Software in the classroom is not only great for students but it also
makes things a lot easier for the teachers. Having the ability to create online
assessments rather than creating it on paper by hand can save a whole lot of
time which every teacher needs. In creating these assessment, teachers are
able to target the main items in their curriculum (Guskey, T. R. 2003). It is
important to utilize software to support assessments because it allows the
students to have a different way to take tests rather than using paper and
pencil all of the time. Socrative, Polleverywhere, and Edmodo are all great
softwares that teachers are able to access to help them make assessments
for their students. With these softwares teachers are able to spice things up
and give their students a different way to take assessment and gives them
an easier way to make the assessments.
is also easy for the teacher to grade because it is their own questions and
their own answers that they would be grading.
Polleverywhere: Polleverywhere is a software that teachers can use
that involves all students and can be very interactive. The teacher has a
question that she asks from her electronic device and each students
responds from their electronic device and the students are able to see the
results on the big screen. For example, the teacher could ask what is your
favorite sport? The students would respond with their answer and the top
four answer would pop up on the screen. This could be a great way for
students to see what the difference is between them and their friends. It can
also be beneficial for the teacher because they would be able to see all of
their students responses at one time (Poll Everywhere. n.d.).
Edmodo: There are so many different things that teachers can do with
the software Edmodo. Teachers are able to make assessment, place students
into groups, and do writing projects. This allows that teacher to track the
progress that their students are making. This software can come in handy
when students are working in a group setting and they can answer a
question as a group and the teacher will get the response from the entire
group as a whole rather than by one student at a time. This software is a
great way to give teachers different ideas for lesson plans if they are wanting
to switch things up a little bit and utilize the technology that is set out for
them.
(Formative and Summative Assessments)
not be getting the correct results that they would be wanting. That is a huge
risk because if the student really ends up not needing help then that is time
that the teacher wasted making the test and taking the time to see what the
child was struggling with. The teachers would just have to tell them that they
need to take it seriously or else they are not going to get the instruction that
they properly need.
(Should a teacher only use technology to assess student learning?
Why or why not?)
Teachers should use technology to assess student learning especially
in this day and age because technology is evolving so quickly and the
students are familiar with is already. Teachers should also use methods other
than technology to reach their students also because there may be a time
when they have a plan to use technology and it may all of a sudden stop
working; there should always be a backup plan.
Concluding Paragraph for Software to Support Assessment
In conclusion, using software to support assessment is not only
beneficial for the students but also for the teachers. These assessments will
make things a lot easier for the teacher and they will be different a fun for
the students. Students seem to respond well to change and switching things
up once in a while is good for them. Technology is the norm in our society
today and teachers should use it to their advantages.
