Lesson Objective(s):
1. Students will brainstorm their colony by completing the project outline
and submitting it through google classroom.
2. Students will begin writing their paragraphs, including sources and
comparing and contrasting the 13 colonies with their own.
Assessment:
Formative:
Students will submit their project outline through google classroom.
Teachers will use this assessment to check for understanding and make sure
the students are on topic and their laws, leaders and resources make sense.
This will be the outline that students will use to begin writing their partner
paragraphs.
Summative:
At the end of the entire project (around March 22nd), students will present a
board game, poster and 6 paragraph essay detailing the creation, laws,
leaders and resources of their successful colony.
Lesson/Assessment Modifications:
To work with both 5th grade classes, we will put 2 students from each
classroom into a 4 person group and split them between Mr. Nakamuras and
Mrs. Laursens classrooms.

THROUGH
Mini Lesson: Using and citing sources in your paragraphs
1. Read example paragraph
2. Think-aloud of writing the paragraph, comparing and contrasting
colonies, creating laws, integrating leaders, creating a reasonable
historical fictional backstory
3. Paragraph Source Requirements:
a. Must cite USA Studies Weekly in each partner paragraph and
may cite additional sources, if desired
b. Must compare and contrast your colony with the original 13
colonies
You will begin your paragraphs after you complete the outline you have
been working on. Your outlines must be completed today.
Discuss what is important (finishing the outline) and what isnt the most
important (naming our citizens, thinking about money or exact costs, specifics)
BEYOND
Students work in groups to complete the outline for their Create-A-State
project. Students will use chromebooks with internet access, USA Studies

Weekly (a Social Studies newsletter) and class notes to support them.


Teachers will circle the room, asking thought-provoking questions and
checking to see if the groups are on track to complete their outline. This
activity will be teacher-led, student-driven as students will work to pace
themselves, while working cooperatively to complete a project outline.
When students complete and submit their outline, they will be shared with all
teachers and will be used as a formative assessment to:
Check for understanding of expectations
See if groups are on the right track
Check to see if laws, resources and leaders make sense in regards to
the colonys location
