Department of Mechanical Engineering, Iit Patna: ME102 Engineering Mechanics Tutorial 3

The document contains three mechanical engineering tutorial problems: 1) calculating the percentage increase in force on a dam face due to 2m of silt accumulation, 2) determining the resultant and point of application of reaction forces on a dam base and resultant of pressure forces on the dam face, and 3) locating the centroid of a volume obtained by rotating a shaded area about the x axis.

Engineering Mechanics

Tutorial 3

1. The dam for a lake is designed to withstand the additional force caused by silt that has settled
on the lake bottom. Assuming that silt is equivalent to a liquid of density = 1.76 x103 kg/m3
and considering a 1-m-wide section of dam, determine the percentage increase in the force
acting on the dam face for a silt accumulation of depth 2 m.
2. The cross section of a concrete dam is as shown. For a 0.3m-wide dam section determine
(a) the resultant of the reaction forces exerted by the ground on the base AB of the dam, (b)
the point of application of the resultant of Part a, (c) the resultant of the pressure forces
exerted by the water on the face BC of the dam.
3. Locate the centroid of the volume obtained by rotating the shaded area about the x axis.
