Cause and Effect
Present to the class different things/situations (a broken glass, a dropout) and ask the
students what may have been the cause of each situation. Afterwards, ask the students to do
something (rip a piece of paper, drop their phones) and ask them what will happen afterwards.
After the activity, explain to them what cause and effect is.
D. Presentation of the Lesson
Study the following sentences. What do the underlined words in each sentence
suggest? How do we call these underlined words?
1. Can you speak louder when delivering your lines?
2. You can take a deep breath before rendering your speech.
3. Other speakers mustnt make noise while one speaker is on stage.
4. You cant speak before a big audience if you are nervous.
E. Discussion
Remember: Can is a modal often used to ask for and give permission. It means something is
allowed and can be done.
Both cant and mustnt are modals used to show that something is
prohibited its not allowed.
Cant tells us that something is against the rules. Mustnt is usually
used when the obligation comes from the person who is speaking.
F. Activity
Present to the class some situations and ask them what should they do and/or not do.
They should construct sentences using can, cant, and mustnt.
