The Bucket Fillers

January 12th, 2016

Supplies
I have been going through
and labelling the childrens
school supplies. Each
subject will have its own
duotang/scribbler so that
you can see your childs
progress throughout the
year!

Welcome to Grade One, where we do all

we can to spread kindness to others!

Yesterday we talked about

temperature and how to
measure temperature! We
made our own
thermometers. Although
they did not work the way
we planned (they either
needed less water, or more
time to adjust), we
predicted what would
happen, and were still
excited to complete the
experiment!

Music - Days 1, 4
Library Day 6
Reading Buddies Day 1
Computers - Day 1, 3
RAZ Kids
Please visit raz-kids.com
to log in and have your
child read online! They
can read books at their
level and complete short
comprehension quizzes.
Please find your childs
log-in information in the
front pouch of their
agenda.

Book Bags
Book Bags will be changed daily-- please send them to
school with the books each day. Try your best to make
reading with your child part of their nightly routine; if you
read for 10 minutes a night it adds up to almost an hour
per week!
A parent or guardian should be signing the duotang each
night!

Agendas
Students will use their agendas to communicate with their parents/guardians. The agenda
will go home every day with school notices, school work etc. We will continue writing small
notes in our agendas! It is important that you send the agenda with your child each day.
I check agendas for notes from parents/guardians, if email is not available.

The Bucket Fillers

Math
We are continuing to work on
measurement. This outcome consists of:
- Determining which object is longest or
shortest and explaining reasoning
- Determining which object is heaviest or
lightest and explaining reasoning
- Determining which object holds the most
or least by filling and explaining reasoning
- Determining which object has the
greatest/least area by covering and
explaining the reasoning
We will not finish this outcome this week
as planned, but hopefully will next week.
We are finishing up weight, and will move
on to capacity and area afterwards. The
children have enjoyed using pan balances
this week. We have made predictions on
what object will be heavier, and have
figured out how many cubes equal the
weight of an object in question.
After we finish this outcome, we will go
back to number sense. As mentioned in
December, we will look at grouping
numbers, and continue to move forward in
our adding and subtracting numbers to 20.
We are also practicing reading number
words 0-20 in our Morning Message!
Whenever possible, please practice at
home with your child.
Social Studies
Yesterday we met with Elder Margaret to
discuss Family and Culture. This was a

begin our focus on family and tradition. In
doing this, we will talk about why our
families are important, and explore family
history. Please let me know if there is any
confusion with the assignment that was
given out last Friday.

Science
Yesterday we explored temperature, and
today we talked about the moon! Please be
on the lookout for a special Moon Bag that
will be circulated next week! A letter will
go home Monday discussing this bag.
English Language Arts
Please review sight words and letter
sounds with your child at home whenever
possible. For those who brought their sight
word cards last Friday, I have placed all of
Januarys words on your rings. Please
ensure that your childs ring is at school so
that I can put new words on
This week, we will be learning about Ikes
sound (I as in i_e ride, igh high, ysky, and ie pie). We will also learn about
the an word family this week.
As I mentioned in the letter that has been
sent home, we are placing a greater focus
on comprehension moving forward. During
our Fairy Tale unit, we will take many
opportunities to retell the stories we are
reading. While retelling, we make sure that
we include: the characters, the setting,
the problem, how the problem was solved,
and how the character changed. All of
these components are divided into the
Beginning (characters and setting), Middle
(the problem), and End (how the problem
was solved) of a story.
At this point, we are working on many
stations throughout the morning: Read to
Self, Read to Someone, Work on Writing,
Word Work, and, soon, Listen to Reading.
During our Centre Time, groups of two will
be able to listen to our class iPad! In our
reading groups this week, we are exploring
a variety of concepts. Some groups are
continuing to work on CVC (words like cat,
pin, hut) words, while others are working on
initial blends (st, br, fr, etc.) and plurals
(socks, foxes).
