STUDENT COUNCIL
Role of the Student Council
Scoil an Chro R Naofa osa values the important role that students can play in the life of their school and believes
that our Student Council can be a positive vehicle for change and a driving force behind a successful school experience
for everyone.
The role of the Student Council is to:

provide an opportunity for pupils to voice their opinions and offer suggestions in relation to many aspects of
school life

act as a voice for the larger student body

discuss issues relevant to our school and encourage and promote initiatives from the pupils

take a leadership role in fundraising initiatives in collaboration with other groups within the school

introduce, welcome and guide guests and dignitaries to the school during important large school events

take an active role in supporting events such as the school musical, intercultural week and other celebrations

The Students Council has been instrumental in the many exciting and positive changes that have taken place in our
school since the Councils inception. The Student Council is instrumental in developing our school and it is believed
that we achieve a more pleasant and vibrant learning environment, as a result.

The Election Process


Every September, representatives from Fifth and Sixth Classes are elected to the Student Council for the duration of
that academic year. Class teachers choose how the ballot is conducted, with one male and female student from each
of the fifth and sixth classes elected to the council. The elected pupils are required to be active participants in the
Council, to attend meetings regularly, participate in activities and be a role model for other students. An initial
meeting is held in the school board room where the new council members are welcomed by the outgoing sixth class
members from the previous academic year. These older members of the council are invited to participate in the
council again if they so wish thereby providing continuity and aiding seamless transition. The principal and / or deputy
principal welcomes the student council and outlines their important role in the life of the school.

Topics for discussion at Student Council meetings:

school rules

behaviour and discipline

green issues

health and safety

friendship

lunchtime games and activities

school improvement

school uniform

fundraising

making the playground a happier place

Structure and nature of meetings:

Student council meetings are normally held at lunch break or at a time convenient to participating students and staff.
One teacher chairs the meeting and one teacher takes the minutes for that meeting. All council members are
encouraged to contribute their ideas and the importance of respect for opposing views is stressed. At the end of every
meeting students are encouraged to consider the matters and discussed and bring their feedback to their peers.
