HOMEWORK

Today your child will be arriving home with a homework contract for Term One. Each
Friday, we will discuss the homework for the week with the children to ensure they
have a strong understanding of what is expected. Homework is given out on Friday
and is due back on Thursday. The children should be aiming to do approximately 1
hour of homework in the course of the week. The activities can be completed in any
order, over any timeframe (all in one session or spread out over several days) so long
as it is all done by Thursday. In addition to this, they should be reading a book of their
choice on a regular basis.
The optional/extra homework is for those children who have completed their
homework quickly or for those children who wish to challenge themselves further. This
component is NOT COMPULSORY.
Homework should be presented neatly including a margin, date and title for each
activity.

AN OUTLINE OF EACH ACTIVITY:

Reading a book of their choice for enjoyment

Approximately 10 minutes, 3-4 times per week

This activity is in place to encourage your child to read regularly. This book
may be from your personal collection of books or books borrowed from libraries. There
is no time frame in which this book must be completed, depending on the book; your
child may require days or weeks to read it. A good idea is to make this book one that
is of interest to your child and enjoyable. This book shouldnt be difficult for them or
they may become discouraged. Your child is expected to fill out the reading log to
support regular reading and their understanding.

Spelling List

Approximately 10 minutes. The children can write their list out 4 times on the
same day, or write one list 4 times over 4 days.

Please ensure when they write out their spelling list (x 4) that they learn them
as they do so, not just simply copy them out. Your child may also wish to enjoy the
games on Spelling City.

Maths Times Table Grid

Approximately 10-15 minutes, once only per week
Your child will receive one grid each week to encourage their rote responses to
multiplication sums. Each week will be a different combination of numbers to the
previous week to encourage their understanding and to avoid memorization or order.
They are expected to time themselves, stop at 5 minutes and then correct their grid
using a times table sheet provided for cross referencing. For some children, they may
have only completed one column in this time, especially if they are using working out
paper or skip counting to find the answer. For other children, they may complete the
whole grid in less than 5 minutes. It is important to note that it is a personal challenge,
not a challenge against other children in the class. Children are encouraged to
spend additional time learning the tables they are finding challenging. It is a
hope that with regular practice, your child will improve upon their speed and accuracy
when recalling their timetables. The grid will also be administered in class once per
week.

Group Novel and Headlining/Written Response

Approximately 10-20 minutes (time will vary depending on activity), once only
per week

Each week, your child will have participated in a Readers Circle discussion
with a teacher guiding their responses. At the end of each lesson, the teacher will
instruct your child on where to continue reading from and to, depending on the
progress of the lesson. Your child will then be expected to have read and completed
the headlining and/or written response components by the time they meet for their
next Readers Circle discussion. It is imperative that this is both completed and
returned (the reader and the work) by the time your childs next session is
to take place. It is very difficult for the remainder of the group to move on and your
childs learning is compromised if their work is incomplete or left at home.

Additional activities
Approximately 15 minutes, once only per week
These will vary each week and will aim to link to a Key Learning Area that is
being taught in class at the time. If it is a writing task, please encourage your child to
write in full sentences and use paragraphs. Your child should be self-editing any
written work to check it that it makes sense and has good use of grammar, spelling
and punctuation to the best of their ability.

Finally, please remember that this is your childs homework. It should not become a
burden on parents. The activities are designed to ensure that your child can complete
the majority of the work independently. Of course, if your child seeks assistance, help
them by teaching them how to solve their query and try to avoid just simply telling
them the answer. If homework is incomplete, children will be required to complete
their homework Friday lunch after they have eaten unless reasonable explanations are
given for not completing their homework that week.

Please do not hesitate to contact us if you have any queries or concerns regarding this
format.
Warm Regards,
Miss Leanne and Miss Catherine.
