Assessment Task is on writing a TEXT RESPONSE ESSAY
Learning Intention:
Reading and responding to Part 1 text questions and learn some key words to use in your
essays in the future. The book is written in 4 parts. Part 1 is 20% of the book.
Success Criteria:
Students can with teacher direction analyse PART 1 of the novel Brooklyn written by Colm
Toibin &

Have a detailed understanding of the text and discover the contention and the themes/main
ideas;
Analyze and learn some of the characteristics of the main characters;
Underline and understand some key quotes in relation to characters, themes and events
presented in the novel.

Key Vocabulary:
Through the characterisation of Eilis, the author Colm Toibin depicts / portrays /
demonstrates / illustrates / indicates / states / exerts/ highlights / draws on / focuses on /
deliberates on / reflects on the struggles of an immigrant

Hook/Getting Knowledge Ready:
Look at the book cover and what do you see? How did you migrate / immigrate / emigrate to
Australia?
Do you have a sister or brother who is highly supportive you?
Did you have to work in a place where you did not like the boss? In what ways does Eilis respond
to her new workplace and her boss, Miss Kelly? Why do you think the writer wrote about Eilis
work experience in Enniscorthy?
Lesson

Differentiation / EAL

Students/Teacher talks about the setting and characters and


determine who might be the protagonist and antagonist of
the novel.
Students answer key questions and learn about the
personalities of main characters.
Students identify key quotes in the book and learn how to use
them as supporting evidence to essay questions under
identified themes and characteristics of main characters.

Listen to teacher readings of


the novel and underline key
quotes.
Paraphrase some of the key
quotes and label their topic.

Revision & Homework: Go over the key words learnt in class. Reread Part 1 and answer the
reading questions I provided. Watch the news and decide what issue to present for SAC2.
