This document contains 6 fluid mechanics questions regarding forces on objects from fluid flows. Question 1 asks to determine the minimum water flowrate needed to tip a block. Question 2 asks for the magnitude and direction of an anchoring force needed to hold an elbow nozzle combination. Question 3 asks for the x and y components of force a pipe exerts on a tee from two free water jets.

Semester 1503
Q1. A 10-mm diameter
jet of water is deflected by a homogeneous block (15 mm by 200 mm by 100 mm) that weight 6 N. Determine the minimum volume flowrate needed to tip the block. Q2. Determine the magnitude and direction of the anchoring force needed to hold the horizontal elbow and nozzle combination shown in the figure. The gage pressure at section (1) is 100 kPa and at section (2) the water exits to the atmosphere (100 kPa). Q3. Water flows as two free jet from the tee attached to the pipe shown in the figure. The exit speed is 15 m/s. If viscous and gravity are negligible, determine the x and y components of the force that the pipe exerts on the tee.
Tutorial 08 Q
Q4. A circular plate having a
diameter of 300 mm is held perpendicular to an axisymmetric horizontal jet of air having a velocity of 40 m/s and a diameter of 80 mm as shown in the figure. A hole at the center of the plate results in a discharge jet of air having a velocity of 40 m/s and a diameter of 20 mm. Determine the horizontal component of the force required to hold the plate stationary.
Q5. A vertical, circular
cross-sectional jet of air strikes a conical deflector as indicated in the figure. A vertical anchoring force of 0.1 N is required to hold the deflector in place. Determine the mass (in kg) of the deflector. The magnitude of the velocity of air remains constant.
Q6. Air flows into the
atmosphere from a nozzle and strikes a vertical plate as shown in the figure. A horizontal force of 12 N is required to hold the plate in place. Determine the reading on the pressure gage. Assume the flow to be incompressible and frictionless.
