Classroom Management Plan

Transitional Kindergarten: Tiffany Sims

Classroom Procedures and Routines:
How do students enter the classroom?
Students arrive to school on the kindergarten playground that is
attached and gated around the kindergarten classrooms. When
the bell rings they line up outside the door and wait to come in
until the teacher invites them.

How do students leave the classroom?

Students are excused one by one depending on their behavior to
walk out of the classroom if it is lunch or recess. If the class is
going to the library or computer lab they are excused one by one
to walk to the door to line up and wait for the teacher to lead
them to where they are going.

How do students move around the room during the

lesson?
The students are given lessons in small groups. Half the class is
at one table learning one thing, and the other half are at another
table with an instructional aid learning something else. They are
to sit in their chairs while they are working, but are allowed to
get up if they need a drink or to use the restroom. After they
finish their work they are excused to put in in their cubbies, and
take out a book to read silently until everyone has finished their
classwork.

How are papers passed out and collected? (Homework,

completed work, extra work)
All papers that are going home to parents such as notes or
homework are put into a homework folder and sent home on
Mondays. The students can bring their folders back with finished
homework at any point during the week, but the folder is due
back on Friday. When the students are in their working groups,
the teacher passes the paper out to everyone at the table, and
the students are responsible for putting their work into their
cubbies after the teacher has checked for understanding. If they
have any extra work, it always goes into their cubbies. They are
responsible for making sure that everything they work on or do
gets put into their cubby to go home to their parents.

How are supplies passed out and collected?

The teacher preps all the supplies for the next days lesson after
school. Whatever each table group is going to need for the next

assignment is placed on the table for the teacher to pass out as

needed. It is also collected back onto the same table so the next
group can use it when they switch tables the next day.

How do students go to the drinking fountain, restroom, or

sharpen a pencil?
Students are allowed to get drinks of water and use the restroom
whenever they need as long as the teacher is not talking or
teaching. If they are finished with their work or at free choice
they have free range to go whenever. Students have no need to
sharpen pencils in transitional kindergarten, but the teacher
always have sharpened pencils available to them for when they
practice writing or for when they want to do writing on their own.

How are students greeted and dismissed?

Students are greeted at the beginning of the day and dismissed
at the end of the day with a hug and a smile as they walk
through the door.

How is roll taken?

The teacher takes roll by saying good morning to each student. If
they are absent a note is sent to the office letting the secretaries
know that someone is not here.

Classroom Physical Environment:

Furniture arrangement:
The classroom is set up into play centers and learning centers.
The play centers are organized at a play kitchen, a Lego center, a
block center, and the free choice center where students can play
with any toy that they want. The learning centers are organized
by color. There is a listening center, an art center, a writing
center, and two large tables for when students do their small
group lessons. There are no student desks, but a large rainbow
rug on the ground that is sectioned off into squares for the
students to sit on.

Bulletin boards
There is a calendar bulletin board where the students learn about
the month, day of the week, and date. They also take time to
practice their letters and numbers as they are posted on the
calendar bulletin board as well. There is a super star bulletin
board where the superstar of the week posts pictures and things
about them. Every week a new student gets to be super star of
the week and they get to share things about them with their
classmates. They also get to take a class stuffed animal home

over the weekend. They get to do fun things with the animal and
write about their adventures in a journal that is shared with the
class the following Monday. There is a student work bulletin
board that takes up an entire wall. It is a special place where
student work is posted. Each student has a spot with their name
on it where they can see the great work that they did on a
special assignment. Lastly there is a sight word bulletin board. It
has some important high frequency sight words where the
students practice learning their sight words for when they go into
kindergarten and first grade.

Student work posted

There is student work posted all over the classroom. There is a
bulletin board that takes up an entire wall where every student
has a special spot to display his or her work. There is also
artwork all over the classroom that fit into the specific theme
that the teacher is working with that month. Currently it is still
winter themed so there are snowmen, snowflakes, raindrops, and
penguins all over the classroom.

Student Management:
Classroom rules
o I will raise my hand and wait to hear my name.
o I will use my inside voice.
o I will use my inside feet.
o I will help put materials away.
o I will respect others and myself.
School rules
o To respect fellow students and staff and to be tolerant of
social and ethnic diversity.
o To obey school and classroom rules.
o To see that important information from school reaches
home and parents.
o To respect the rights of others to study and learn.
o To complete all classwork and homework, participate in
class, and meet deadlines.
o To put forth maximum effort toward educational success.
o To attend school daily and to be on time.
o To respect public property and carefully use and return all
equipment.
o To immediately respond to directives of any adult staff
member.
Student discipline procedure

o Students not following rules or directions are given a verbal

warning to behave correctly. If they do not make a wiser
choice for themselves:
They do not get to participate in free choice.
They do not get to participate in centers.
They have to walk away from where they are at (if
they are at free choice or centers) and take a
thinking break to think about their choices and how
they can make a wiser one.
Teaching Practices:
Established routines
o Students line up at the door when the bell rings and wait to
be invited into the classroom.
o When students are separated into their lesson groups, they
line up at the table and wait to be invited to sit down by
the teacher at that table.
o Students must raise their hand when they have something
to say.
o When students are sitting on the rug they are to be sitting
organized on their bottoms, hands in their lap, facing the
teacher, with their voices off.
Motivational phrases
o When someone in the class does something outstanding
they are given a cheer. The teacher says, Hip hip and the
class says, Hooray!
o Students are constantly being told how great they are
doing when they follow directions, complete an
assignment, or if they do something especially nice for one
of their classmates or peers.
Positive reinforcement
o Students have sticker charts. When they finish their work
or follow rules they are given a sticker. When their sticker
chart is full they get to choose from the treasure chest,
which is full of fun items such as pencils, erasers, stickers,
and small toys.
Response control/expectations
o Whole class
Ringing a bell for attention and everyone has to
freeze.
The students recite the class rules together at the
beginning of the school day after the flag solute.
o Individual

Students are responsible for following the class rules

on a daily basis.
o Helping students when youre working with others
Students are always able to ask the teacher for
assistance. This works mostly because when the
students are doing lessons they are split into groups
of two. When they are in their small group settings it
is easier for them to ask for teacher help and get it
right away.
Key instructional phrases
o Point to _________
o We will all read together when I count to three
o Have your best manners for brain work time.
Physical involvement of teacher with the whole class
o When the class is together as a whole they are doing circle
time where they practice daily with the calendar, letters of
the alphabet, and their numbers.
o When the students are at centers, the teacher monitors
student learning and involvement at each center.
Transitions
o Within lessons
The teacher gives verbal transitions within a lesson.
Whether it is to grab a certain color crayon or to put
their tools away, the teacher gives the cue. This is
easy to do because the class is separated into two
groups during lesson time, which leaves each
teacher with no more than seven students at a time
(since it is TK the class is separated into morning and
afternoon classes, so every lesson is taught four
times. Twice to the two different groups in the
morning, and twice to the two different groups in the
afternoon.
o Between lessons
When the students are switching from one table to
another for the second lesson of the day, the teacher
asks them to line up next to the table to are going to
next, and they wait for the teacher at that table to
invite them to sit down.
