Slope Stabilization With Vetiver Grass

Slope stabilization with vetiver grass is proposed as a more economical alternative to conventional slope stabilization methods. Vetiver grass is suitable for stabilizing slopes in all climatic conditions and soil types, as its deep, strong root system can extend down 2-3 meters. The roots have high tensile and shear strengths, helping to stabilize slopes. Vetiver grass re-grows quickly after drought or frost and forms dense hedges that slow water flow and allow more time for absorption, protecting slopes from erosion.

SLOPE STABILIZATION WITH VETIVER GRASS

After taking above precautions , some land slides occurred .To solve this
problem conventional slope stabilization methods non economical.
To overcome this problem slope stabilization by vegetation is proposed .
The slope is stabilized with vetiver grass. It yields good results because
vetiver has the following distinct and unique features.

Vetiver grass
Vegetation by vetiver grass is the most suitable in all climatic conditions - least to
heavy rainfall as well as low to high temperature.
Vetiver grass can easily grow in all types of soil such as clayey, sandy, gravely as
well as in heavily erodible soils. Moreover, it does not require any maintenance.
Vetiver roots are, per unit area, stronger and deeper Than tree roots. Vetiver
extremely deep and massive finely structured root system can extend down to two
to three meters . at this site due laterite not extended as fill soil.
.

These roots have a mean tested tensile strength of about 75 Mega Pascal
(MPa), which is equivalent to 1/6 of mild steel reinforcement and a shear
strength increment of 39% at a depth of 0.5m.
This grass re-grows very quickly following drought, frost, salt and other
adverse soil conditions when the adverse effects are removed.
When planted closely together, vetiver plants form dense hedges, hedges
slow down the flow and spreads it out, allowing more time for water to soak
into the ground.
The stabilization and protection of slope by vetiver grass is effective,
efficient and low cost then other traditional erosion control system
