Self-Assessment of Final Practicum
Your internship has been a total experience that included not only yourself, but also all of
the staff, administration, students, parents, and community members who participated in
some way in projects of your implementation. Also, you might consider all of the individuals
you were required to deal with as you conducted the internship duties and responsibilities.
For example, discipline problems would normally involve students, teachers, and parents at
a minimum. As you attended to such discipline problems, you would be engaged in trying
to facilitate among the needs of all individuals. Given this back-drop, provide answers to
the following questions regarding your internship practicum experience.
1. Was your internship effective? Did it meet all of the goals and objectives as stated in
your Planning Guide?
In answering this question fully, consider the use of such instrumentation as:
a. Pre- and post-surveys to determine outcomes of staff development training
b. Observation checklists to determine if students were behaving in the ways
expected by the school and the community
c. Interview schedules to determine parent and community opinions about the
need for a change or the impact of a change
d. Data from standardized tests and measures to determine how well students
have learned over a given period of time in given subject areas.

I feel that my internship was effective and did meet all the goals and objectives in the
planning guide. I had intern experience in a public high school, a public middle school and
a private school for kids with autism and conduct disorder. I was able to observe and
participate in scheduling, faculty and staff issues, finance, PBIS, testing, parent and
community meetings and student discipline issues. During this time I got to experience
several different administrative supervisors and ways of handling issues. Overall, I did
feel like this was a wonderful learning experience.
2. Did your internship projects meet the specific needs of all of the individuals who
participated? Where Question #1 focuses on the project goals and objectives of your
internship, this question focuses on the needs of individual participants. How well do
you believe individual participants needs were met throughout your internship?

I believe the majority of participants needs were met during my internship. There were
some instances where the end result may not have felt to the participant like it was meeting
their needs, particularly in instances of discipline, faculty or scheduling issues; however in
the overall school needs had to be the main focus and concern over individual issues or
requests. In general I felt that most people were satisfied with administrations decisions
and compromise was achieved.

3. Did your internship help to bring about meaningful organizational change in your
school building? Many times internship projects are designed to facilitate the
development and implementation of new programs either for the delivery of
instructional services to students of to help in the management of the organization.
Did your internship facilitate such conditions at the building level? One important way
to determine the answer to this question is to investigate whether or not your
internship projects had an impact on the buildings mission and /or vision statements
regarding schooling. Was learning positively affected by your work?

I believe there were quite a few projects that were essential to the school and would have been
completed regardless of whether there was an intern at the school. However, one project that I
feel definitely had an impact was Red Ribbon and Drug Awareness Week. I worked very
consistently with the intern and students from the school to make sure the project was interesting
and covered a great deal of information about illegal drug use.

4. Did your internship help to bring about meaningful organizational change in the school
district? There have been times when an internship project has been piloted at a
building site with the intention that, if judged to be effective, the district or the division
would have considered adapting it at other sites. In this way a pilot project could have
an impact on the organizational change of an entire district or division. How close did
your internship come to enjoying such an impact on the district or division? In refining
your answer to this question with an interest of establishing a broader base t it,
consider reviewing the districts or the divisions mission statement or board of
education annual reports on their goals to the community.

I dont feel like my internship had any specific meaningful organizational change in the school
district. I did enjoy meeting with different administrators and discussing projects that they were
considering implementing. I also enjoyed getting to meet with community members. I felt in
my intern capacity I was treated very respectfully by everyone I worked with.

5. Did your internship experience provide project participants an opportunity to have


input on the overall assessment of the experience? Did you give staff members,
parents, students, and community members an opportunity to let you know how they
think your internship affected the district or the division, the building, and the
instructional programs?

During my internship there were mostly times when students or their parents would say
thank you after a meeting or for individualized assistance in a certain area; however I didnt
have any particular moments of public recognition for something I had done as an intern.
I did have an overall feeling of appreciation from each site that I worked at, as I appreciated
the opportunity to learn from them.

6. Identify your efforts to bring members of different groups together to work on


achieving similar goals and objectives.

One project I worked on to bring members of different groups together was Red Ribbon
And Drug Awareness Week. This project involved faculty, students, administration and
community members. Another project was PBIS, the school team worked together with the
faculty, students and community members to try and find things to encourage good behavior
in school as well as behavior issues.
7. Identify strategies used to engage members from different constituents in the project
work. Examples of such constituents include but are not limited to these: parents,
senior citizens, and local government figures.

In the PBIS project we would work as a team in the school to try and figure out when behaviors
manifested and what were some issues identified, also if there was a specific pattern to the
behavior. This would include talking to the teachers, parents, medical professionals as well as
behavioral health professionals.

8. Name or identify types of planning strategies utilized in your project work.

This would depend on the type of work that was involved in the project. However, I enjoyed
doing things that involved collaborative teamwork. I also found it effective to give students
a project to work on and then convene a meeting to discuss all ideas and possible options. I felt
like this approach helped students have a sense of personal investment in the project.

9. Name or identify ways by which your internship experience might have made it clear to
you that local issues can confront us with barriers to change.

During the time of my internship there were several issues that involved the school and the
community. The most prevalent issue I remember was the funding of a new Allegany High
School. This was hard not to notice since one of my internship sites was Allegany High School.
This was frequently a topic of discussion and obviously funding was a barrier. The BOE and
The County Commissioners failed to reach an agreement on how much money the new school
should cost and what part would be contributed by the county. The disagreements and funding
issues have caused a major delay in building the school, which has ultimately hurt the students
and community.
