Non-Contact EMAT Transduction

EMATs (electromagnetic acoustic transducers) are used to generate and detect ultrasonic guided waves in metals. EMATs induce eddy currents in metal surfaces using magnets, which create forces according to the Lorentz force law. These forces generate elastic waves, such as Rayleigh, shear horizontal, and Lamb waves. EMATs can selectively generate and receive different wave modes based on frequency and transducer design, making them well-suited for guided wave testing. They are also useful for automated analysis of defects in structures like pipe girth welds.
