Homework Assignment 1: Engineering Statics - Session 2015

This document contains a homework assignment for an engineering statics course. The assignment includes 6 problems involving forces, moments, and force couples. Problem 1 asks to determine the angle and direction of the resultant force of two applied forces. Problem 2 asks to find the magnitude and direction of the resultant force shown in a diagram. Problem 3 asks to calculate moments about two points from a perpendicular force. Problem 4 asks to find force directions that produce maximum and minimum moments. Problems 5 and 6 ask to replace force systems with equivalent force couples. Solutions must include diagrams and clear working. Late assignments will not be accepted without prior approval.

Statics Session 2015

Homework Assignment 1

1. At what angle must the 800-lb force be applied in order that the resultant R of
the two forces has a magnitude of 2000 lb? For this condition, determine the
angle between R and the vertical.

Figure 1

2. Determine the magnitude of the resultant force in Figure 2 and its direction,
measured counter clockwise from the positive x-axis.

3. The 30N force P is applied perpendicular to the portion BC of the bent bar.
Determine the moment of P about point B and about point A.

4. Determine the direction (0 < <180) of the force F = 40lbs so that it

produces a) the maximum moment about point A and b) the minimum
moment about point A. Compute the moment in each case.

5. Replace the 800 lb force acting at point A by a force- couple system at (a)
point O and (b) point B.

6. The angle plate is subjected to the two 250-N forces shown. It is desired to
replace these forces by an equivalent set consisting of the 200-N force
applied at A and a second force applied at B. Determine the y-coordinate of
B.

All problems must be solved and a clear solution with diagrams where
necessary should be provided.
Late assignments will not be entertained unless prior arrangement was made
with the instructor.
